What actually kills colonies isn’t what you think. An honest, technical and unsentimental guide for anyone starting out.
After a few seasons, you realise something uncomfortable: the most expensive mistakes you make at the beginning are not technical. A sting because you did not use the smoker properly, a frame that falls out, the day you confuse a queen cell with a drone cell… you survive those and learn in a single afternoon.
The ones that ruin your season (and sometimes your entire apiary) are mindset errors. Wrong ideas you bring in from the start that poison every decision that follows. This post is about those, and the practical consequences that arise from them.
If I had to sum up everything that follows in one sentence: A colony is not a pet nor a wild piece of nature that looks after itself. It is a production animal under your care. From there, everything changes.
The error that contaminates everything: romantic beekeeping
In stable wild populations, around half of all colonies die each year due to natural selection. There are plants whose pollen is nutritionally poor, and others whose secretions are toxic depending on the weather. And above all, there is Varroa destructor, an introduced parasite against which the European honey bee has not developed sufficient evolutionary defences.
And this doesn’t happen only in nature: even the most technologically advanced commercial beekeeping suffers. In the United States, the winter 2024-2025 set new records, with national winter losses around 40% and above 60% among commercial beekeepers. The context is different from yours (there, intensive almond migratory beekeeping dominates), but the lesson holds: bees do not survive on their own, not even in expert hands.
From this bias arise two dangerous offspring:
“Treatment-free” management. In a beginner’s hands, in practice, this translates into one thing only: total loss of colonies due to Varroa pressure and the viruses it transmits. Treatment-free beekeeping exists as a serious, long-term genetic selection line, but it is not a starting point—it is a destination reached by very few after years of work.
Anthropomorphism. Assuming bees “feel” or “decide” like you prevents you from making cold, evidence-based decisions rooted in pathology and population dynamics. A queenless colony with no solution must be combined with another colony or sacrificed, not “given time to see if it perks up.” Accept from the start that you will have losses, and that they are not personal failures: they are part of the trade.
Modern beekeeping is precision animal husbandry. What separates the one who thrives from the one who loses colonies year after year is not affection, but timely application of sanitary control and intelligent supplementation.
Block 1. Mistakes before you have a single bee
Starting to study in spring
Beekeeping is best learned in winter, through reading and planning in the warmth of home. If you start learning when the season is already in full swing, you will be late for every management task: swarm prevention, adding supers and treatments. You will always be on the back foot, reacting to problems that can no longer be corrected.
Not planning the beekeeping year
Beekeeping does not run by days, it runs by windows. And you do not choose the windows: they are set by the flowering of your region and the Varroa life cycle. If you miss one, there is no remedy until the next year.
Before starting, have a beekeeping calendar adapted to your comarca with clear milestones: early spring inspection, swarming control, super placement, harvest, immediate Varroa treatment after honey removal (this is the critical window, the one that saves or kills most colonies), winter feeding, and oxalic acid application in the absence of brood. A generic internet calendar won’t do: orange blossom, sunflower, rosemary, or heather flower at different times depending on where you are. Improvising means arriving too late for everything.
Thinking that YouTube is enough
Buying a hive and “letting the bees do their work” is a recipe for disaster. You need a solid foundation in bee biology, management, health, and seasonal behaviour before placing the first frame.
A video won’t teach you to smell a sick hive, or to feel the buzz of a colony that is becoming queenless. Before spending a single euro on live bees: take a training course, join a local association, and if possible, accompany an experienced beekeeper for a full season. A serious course covers, at minimum, bee biology and morphology, colony organisation, diseases and treatments, management calendar, reproduction, legislation, and honey extraction.
Not taking an allergy test
This comes before the bees. Bee venom can cause severe reactions: around 2% of the population is sensitive, and a minority may suffer a fatal anaphylactic shock if not treated quickly. If you have a history of strong reaction to stings, poorly controlled asthma, mastocytosis, or any reasonable doubt, assess your risk with a doctor or allergist before starting. This is not a universal formality—it is common sense based on your personal history.
And conversely: don’t seek stings to “build tolerance”. A sting is not gym training. The goal is not to develop a hermetic shell or to toughen up through repeated stings, but to work protected, with good technique, knowing how to recognise symptoms of systemic reaction (widespread hives, facial or throat swelling, dizziness, breathing difficulty), and knowing exactly what to do if they appear.
Buying bees recklessly: without a site and without guarantees
Two mistakes often go together. The first is buying bees before securing a suitable site. Bees do not wait: if they arrive before you have a place or a plan, you start under stress and have to improvise. A good site needs clean water nearby, morning sun and some summer shade, shelter from the prevailing wind, free-draining ground (avoid damp hollows, which favour Nosema), and vehicle access for moving supers. Also consider apiary density in the area—too many nearby apiaries increase competition for forage and disease transmission—crops treated with plant-protection products and the risk of theft.
The second, buying live bees without guarantees. A cheap, unverified nucleus is a time bomb: you must know the origin, that the queen is laying and is from the current year, the Varroa level, the health status, and that it includes inspectable frames with a good brood pattern. Buying from a reputable supplier saves you from starting with a sick or half-dead colony.
Ignoring legal regulations
Ignoring legal regulations
In Spain you cannot place hives wherever you like: beekeeping is livestock and is regulated. The Royal Decree 209/2002 sets the framework, and ignoring it exposes you to fines and disputes with neighbours. The essentials you must comply with:
- Register your beekeeping operation in the REGA of your autonomous community, even if you have only one hive.
- Keep a beekeeping holding register for your operation and submit the annual census declaration (check the deadline in your autonomous community).
- Identify each hive with your apiary code, visible, legible, and with an indelible mark. Since January 2024, this has been governed by the RD 787/2023, which replaced the identification provision in the old RD 209/2002.
- Respect the minimum distance requirements for placement.

The regulation allows reductions: up to 50% on roads and lanes if the apiary is on a slope with an elevation difference exceeding 2 m, and up to 75% if you install a fence or screen at least 2 m high that forces bees to fly at height.
Notice: this is the national framework, but each autonomous community may tighten or adjust it, especially for apiaries kept for home consumption. Consult your autonomous community before installing anything. And for distances between apiaries, apiaries with fewer than 26 hives do not count as a reference point.
Block 2. The material: decisions you carry for years
Start with a single hive
This is the most common mistake and, paradoxically, the most difficult option for a beginner. With a single hive you have no reference: you do not know whether what you see is normal or a problem. And if the queen is lost or the colony weakens, you have nothing with which to rescue it.
With two to four hives you have a point of comparison and, above all, your own resources: if one becomes queenless, you transfer a frame containing eggs from another; if one weakens, you reinforce it with capped brood from a strong colony. The ideal number to begin is between 2 and 5. Fewer leaves you without a safety net; more overwhelms you.
Mixing hive types in the same apiary
Having Langstroth, Dadant and Layens hives coexisting is an endless logistical nightmare: you cannot exchange frames or supers between them, which are precisely the tools you will need most to balance and rescue colonies. Choose one system and standardise.
Choosing a hive type based on fashion rather than criteria
Bees do not care about the box’s geometry or external colour: they only need a warm, dry space of appropriate volume. Thus, fashion trends such as “more natural management” (Top Bar, Warré) do not deliver what they promise to the bee, and they complicate your standardisation, health management and performance.
In the Iberian Peninsula, the real choice usually lies between the horizontal system Layens and the vertical modular systems Langstroth / Dadant. The key difference for a beginner:

If your aim is to develop technically or commercially, choose Langstroth or Dadant. Layens has its place in traditional migratory beekeeping, honey production for home consumption and excellent insulation, but its main drawback for modern management is the lack of separation between brood and honey. Buying a smoker with an internal cartridge
It sounds like a trivial detail, but it is one of the most frustrating. Smokers with a solid internal insert or cartridge restrict the airflow and keep going out. Choose one with a three-legged perforated grate at the bottom: it holds the fuel above the base and maintains slow, steady combustion. A smoker with poor draw offers no protection.
Block 3. Management: neither too much nor too little
Not knowing how to read a frame before touching anything
This is the core skill, the one that underpins all others. Before moving a frame, dividing or treating, you must know how to read what is in front of you. A frame tells you the entire state of the colony if you know how to look:
- Capped honey appears white, above and at the sides. The pollen (bee bread) forms a coloured band between the honey and the brood.
- Capped brood tells you more than anything else: a compact and uniform pattern (like a solid panel) means a good, young queen. A patchy, mosaic brood pattern with gaps is an alarm: an old or poorly mated queen, inbreeding or brood disease. Learn to distinguish these two patterns and you will be halfway to a diagnosis.
- Healthy open brood consists of white, pearly larvae curled into a C and glistening. If you see yellowish, melted, sunken or foul-smelling larvae, stop everything: it may be foulbrood and is a notifiable disease.
- The queen cells on the lower edge of the frame usually indicate swarming, and in the central area, emergency (queenless) conditions. But their location is a guide, but it does not provide a diagnosis on its own: interpret them alongside the eggs, the queen’s age, the available space and the population pressure. The drone cells are bulging, bullet-shaped, and are normal in appropriate numbers.
And here is the nuance you asked for: not all colonies develop the same. Two hives placed side by side may progress at opposite rates due to genetics, queen age or health. That is why you manage each colony based on what you read in its frames, not in batches or by your neighbour’s calendar.
Opening every two days (or never opening)
There are two beginner profiles. The anxious one who opens the hive every two days “to see how it is going”, and the fearful one who does not dare open it for weeks. Both lose.
Opening a hive too often stresses the colony, disrupts temperature and humidity control and triggers robbing. A reasonable interval is one inspection every 7 to 14 days, depending on the season. Never opening the hive is worse, however: by the time a problem is visible from outside, it may have been developing inside for weeks. The key is not frequency but inspecting properly: check queen status (look for eggs, not the queen herself), health, space, stores and queen cells.
And an important nuance: if the hive is doing well, do not touch it. The beginner tends to “do something for the sake of doing”, rearranging frames, changing things unnecessarily. Each unnecessary manipulation is stress, risk of robbing and an additional opportunity to crush the queen. Sometimes the best management is to close and leave it to work.
Opening in cold months and breaking propolis seals
Most beekeepers learn this the hard way, by losing a colony. In winter, bees seal gaps with propolis. If you open the hive in cold weather, you break those seals, and the bees cannot produce fresh propolis to reseal them. The result is cold draughts, increased consumption of stores and, often, colony death. Do not open a hive in winter except in a genuine emergency.
Using the smoker incorrectly
Smoke triggers an instinct: bees gorge on honey and block alarm pheromones. But there are three ways to do it wrong: not using it (the beginner who wants to appear brave), overusing it (irritates more than calms), or using hot smoke and unsuitable fuel. The smoke must be cool, dense and white. A few puffs into the entrance before opening and between frames is enough. Caution: overusing smoke or using poor materials poisons bees and leaves a smoky taste in the honey, devaluing your harvest.
Wearing the equipment incorrectly
Watching an experienced beekeeper work without gloves can create a false sense of ease. Common mistakes include a suit that is too tight (when the fabric touches the skin, a sting can penetrate), unchecked zips and veils with tiny tears. The suit should be deliberately loose: the air gap between the fabric and your skin is part of your protection. One detail that almost nobody considers is that the suit accumulates alarm pheromones with use. Washing it is not just hygiene; it is safety.
Regarding working without gloves: it is a technique many professionals advocate because bare skin forces you to move slowly and carefully (bees ‘correct’ you when you are abrupt). It is optional and personal; if it gives you confidence to refine handling, go ahead, but it is not mandatory to begin.
Failing to recognise the loss of the queen
A queenless colony does not scream. Traffic at the hive entrance may seem normal for days, and they may even appear calmer initially. Learn to read the signs: absence of eggs, absence of young larvae, irregular or declining brood, and bees sounding more shrill when you open the hive.
You do not need to find the queen to know that she was present recently: an upright egg at the bottom of a cell means the queen passed through less than 3 days ago. Detecting queenlessness promptly is critical, because the colony can develop laying workers, and recovering a laying-worker colony is very difficult. See Where is the queen for more detail.
Causing robbing through neglect
Leaving frames with leftover honey exposed near the apiary, spilling syrup on the ground during feeding, or returning freshly extracted wet supers in broad daylight. Any of these three actions triggers mass robbing and deadly battles between colonies. Robbing almost always starts with your own carelessness, not ‘bad luck’. Work cleanly, and during periods of scarcity, feed and handle colonies in the evening.
Block 4. Health: this is where colonies die
Varroa destructor and the viruses it transmits are the main cause of colony mortality worldwide. Underestimating it causes more beginners to fail than any other mistake.
The fallacy of visual inspection
Relying on how the colony appears from the outside, or on whether you see mites on adult bees, is a serious diagnostic error. The reason is biological: when there is capped brood, much of the Varroa (often the majority) remains hidden inside the cells, out of sight. The proportion varies with the season and brood levels, but the message does not change: what you see on adult bees is only the tip of the iceberg, and visual inspection always underestimates the problem.
Monitoring must be quantitative: counting natural fall on the bottom board, and above all, alcohol wash (more accurate than the sugar shake). If infestation exceeds 2-3% in adult bees during peak season, the colony is at risk of collapse and action must be taken immediately. Monitor from day one, not when the hive is already failing.
Do it properly: a sample of about 300 bees (half a cup) provides a reliable estimate. Measure several times a year, not just once, and do what almost nobody does even though it is crucial: sample again after treatment to confirm that it worked. Treating without checking is only half a treatment.
Treating ‘blindly’ by calendar
Applying the same treatment, same dates, every year, without measuring. Each season and each apiary is different. Worse still: applying a product without considering whether there is capped brood or not. A short-acting treatment (oxalic acid) only kills Varroa on adult bees; a long-release treatment (thymol, formic acid) also covers Varroa emerging from cells. If you do not match the product to the colony’s condition, the effect is partial and infestation returns.
A calendar note valid for most of Spain: the most dangerous period is late summer and early autumn. Varroa has been multiplying for months, and the colony begins to reduce in population, so the mite-to-bee ratio spikes just as winter bees are being reared. Missing that window is what kills the colony in January, even if in September it looked excellent.
Incorrect placement and handling of acaricides
Frequent errors that ruin effectiveness:
- Strips placed on the sides or on honey frames. They must be placed according to the product’s instructions, in the active part of the brood nest where nurse bees will come into contact with them, never on honey frames or in empty areas with no traffic. At the edges, bees barely touch the medication, especially in autumn when the brood nest contracts.
- Leaving strips in place for months. They must be removed at the end of treatment. Leaving them causes resistance.
- Underdosing in order to save money. Same effect: you select for resistant mites.
Oxalic acid: absolute precision
Oxalic acid-based products can achieve very high efficacy in the absence of capped brood, provided they are authorised, dosed correctly, and applied under good conditions. But they demand skill:
- Overdosing the oxalic acid dribble (concentrations such as 80 g/L) damages the bees’ cuticle and causes them to abandon the brood.
- Dribbling in severe cold, with bees tightly clustered, kills thousands through hypothermia and contact toxicity. Dribbling requires active bees to distribute the treatment properly.
- Sublimating with poor equipment and no thermostat. Oxalic acid degrades above 250 °C and loses up to 60% of its efficacy. And completely discard liquid solvent vaporisers such as FURETTO: they overheat and generate toxic gases for brood and for you.

Unauthorised products and residues in wax and honey
When an acaricide loses efficacy due to resistance (this has happened to tau-fluvalinate, and increasingly to amitraz), many people make the serious error of doubling the dose or using products not authorised for use in beekeeping (Taktic, Bovitraz, and others). This accelerates resistance and contaminates the hive. Analyses in the USA have detected traces of amitraz and its metabolite in most wax and honey samples, and tau-fluvalinate in nearly all wax from migratory operations. These residues compromise brood development, shorten worker lifespan, and endanger the food safety of your honey.
As support within an integrated management approach, the shook-swarm method (brushing bees over clean wax and removing capped brood) forces Varroa out of hiding and leaves almost the entire population exposed, so that an oxalic acid application acts with much greater efficacy and leaves no residues.
Relying on a single method against Varroa
Even if you find a treatment that works for you, do not become attached to it. Relying on one method year after year is exactly what creates resistance that has already affected fluvalinate and other molecules.
The correct approach is integrated pest management: rotate active ingredients between seasons and combine authorised chemical treatments with biotechnical methods, which create neither resistance nor residues. These methods include a shook swarm, caging the queen to interrupt egg laying (creating a period without capped brood, so oxalic acid can achieve 100% efficacy), and removing drone-brood frames, where Varroa concentrates. The more fronts you open, the less room the mite has.
Feeding with honey or pollen of unknown origin
It is one of the main vehicles for spreading spores of deadly diseases such as American foulbrood. Never feed honey or pollen of unknown sanitary origin.
Neglecting biosecurity and old wax
Diseases travel on your hands and equipment. Errors that spread them: failing to disinfect the hive tool and knife between hives, moving frames from one box to another without criteria, and most seriously, reusing equipment from dead hives without knowing the cause of death (you could be spreading American foulbrood spores throughout the apiary). Disinfect equipment, isolate suspicious colonies, and record the treatments you apply.
And wax: old, dark combs accumulate residues of acaricides, disease remnants, and reduce cell size. Replace wax each season by removing the oldest frames and introducing new wax foundation. It is not a cost, it is health: healthier brood and reduced chemical load in the hive.
Block 5. Feeding: the double-edged weapon
Not feeding when needed
The mirror of romanticism: believing bees always manage on their own. Malnutrition is one of the leading causes of winter mortality. Artificial feeding is essential during periods of scarcity (late spring, extreme summer, autumn) or in newly established colonies without reserves. The full rationale is detailed in Feeding bees.
Not distinguishing between maintenance syrup and stimulant syrup
They are two different tools for two different purposes:
- Heavy syrup for winter stores (3:1 or 2:1, two parts sugar to one part water): a thick syrup with low water activity that bees store quickly. Use it to build winter stores in late summer and autumn.
- Stimulative feed (1:1): mimics the density of fresh nectar, stimulates the glands of nurse bees and encourages queen laying. Use it to stimulate brood rearing in spring.
Always giving the same syrup without considering the colony’s stage is wasting the tool, or worse, causing the blockage described next.
And one overlooked detail: stimulating laying with sugar when no pollen is entering and no protein is available is a mistake. The syrup provides energy, but brood needs protein. Forcing the queen to lay without available protein forces the colony to rear brood it cannot feed or sustain. Stimulate only when pollen is entering or a protein substitute is present.
Honey-bound brood nest
This is a subtle but highly damaging technical mistake. If you overfeed syrup when the hive has no vertical space to expand (no supers), the workers store it in cells that become vacant in the brood chamber. The queen is left with nowhere to lay.
From that point, a chain reaction occurs: open brood decreases, nurse bees accumulate royal jelly they cannot use, queen pheromone distribution is disrupted due to overcrowding, and swarming urge is triggered. Just before the main nectar flow, you lose forager strength and the productive season collapses. To unblock a hive already saturated: remove up to four frames filled with honey or syrup from the brood nest and replace them at the edges with frames of wax foundation or drawn comb, to restart queen laying.
Homemade sugar syrup
Making ‘invert sugar’ at home often produces high concentrations of HMF (hydroxymethylfurfural), which is toxic to bees and shortens their lifespan. Use well-dissolved sucrose (ordinary white sugar); there is no need to invert it. Do not prepare syrup too far in advance either: in summer, it ferments in the feeder within 3–4 days.
Liquid feed and collective feeders
Two more classics:
- Liquid syrup in cold weather adds too much moisture to the hive and may chill or drown bees. In winter, use only solid feed (bee fondant).
- Collective feeding in barrels promotes robbing and disease transmission, and prevents you from knowing how much each hive consumes. Feeding must be individual, within each hive box.
Feeding during a strong nectar flow
Giving syrup when there is a natural nectar flow causes bees to store it in supers and contaminate your own harvest. If there is a honey flow, do not feed.
Block 6. Queen, genetics and reproduction
Drowning the queen during introduction
Queen introduction is delicate and requires a nectar flow or stimulative feeding. The most common beginner mistake: pressing the queen cage against a frame containing capped or uncapped honey. When the cappings are broken, the honey floods the cage, wets the queen’s wings and spiracles, and drowns her instantly. Press the cage into the centre of the brood chamber, over empty comb or capped brood comb, with the ventilation mesh fully exposed so that worker bees can contact it.
Multiplying from swarming hives
Making splits from queen cells from hives that have just swarmed naturally seems sensible but is a serious error: you are selecting for and propagating a strong swarming tendency, that is, bees with a strong tendency to swarm. Make increase from your best colonies (productive, gentle, healthy), not from colonies that swarm.
Keeping old queens
Failing to replace queens periodically reduces productivity and makes colonies much less tolerant of demanding treatments (formic acid, brood blockages). Queen replacement is routine management, not a luxury.
Failing to anticipate swarming
Swarming is the colony’s natural reproduction: the old queen and up to 60% of workers leave. For those who have not seen the signs, finding the hive half-empty is a shock. Signs appear before the swarm leaves: a full brood chamber, queen cells on lower edges of frames, restricted queen laying, and overcrowding.
The measures that actually work: open up useful space before congestion (empty frames or a super), split a colony or make up a nucleus, equalise by transferring capped brood from strong to weak colonies, or techniques such as the Demaree method. Beware of a classic mistake: cutting out queen cells does not by itself resolve the swarming urge. If you do not address the root cause (lack of space, a blocked brood nest or excess capped brood), you only delay the problem by a few days or make it worse. Block 7. The first year and ego
Underestimating the time and consistency required
Most people who give up do not do so because of technical difficulty, but because they underestimated the time required. Beekeeping is not watering a plant occasionally. During peak season, inspections are every one or two weeks, without excuse, and at times you cannot choose. Post-harvest treatment does not wait for you to return from holiday. Swarming does not warn you that you have a wedding on Saturday.
Before committing, make an honest calculation of how many hours you can devote between spring and autumn. It is better to start with fewer colonies and look after them properly than to have ten and be late with every one. Consistency, not intensity, is what keeps an apiary alive.
Harvesting honey in the first year
The error of impatience. In the first year the decision to harvest is based on the colony’s stores, not the calendar. Only remove genuine surplus honey from the supers, never honey from the brood nest, which is the fuel the colony needs to overwinter. If you remove it, the colony dies of starvation before spring. Practical rule: if you cannot calculate how much food the colony needs in reserve to overwinter in your area, do not harvest. In areas such as the Mediterranean, with a strong nucleus and good spring, there may be some surplus early on; elsewhere, not even in the second year. Your goal in the first year is not to fill jars: it is to have the colony survive and thrive into spring.
Wanting to grow too fast
Do not jump from 0 to 500 colonies on impulse. As colony numbers rise, problems multiply, inspections take far longer and mistakes have greater consequences. Consolidate your skills with 2–5 colonies for at least one complete season—spring, summer, autumn and winter—before expanding. Two years of practice will give you enough judgement to decide whether beekeeping should remain a hobby, become a profession or be abandoned.
Block 8. What separates the learner from the one who repeats mistakes
Not keeping a field notebook
Without records you cannot assess successes or failures, or identify patterns in each colony. Keep a basic record for each colony at every inspection: date, queen status (laying: yes/no), queen cells, estimated population, honey and pollen reserves, health (Varroa infestation level and symptoms), feeding and treatments. Over time, these data form a map that allows you to anticipate problems rather than react to them.
Isolating yourself: no mentor, no community
The hardest mistake to admit. Beekeeping has its own jargon, enormous local variations, and situations no book fully anticipates. A local association offers peer support, mentoring and advice from people who know your flora, your climate, and your Varroa pressure.
Because this is the core: beekeeping is local. What works in a Mediterranean citrus grove may not work in a mountain heath. Humility is the first tool of the beekeeper
There are beekeepers with thirty years behind them who will tell you, without pretence, that they are still learning. And it is true: the climate changes, blooms fail, Varroa pressure rises and falls, and what works one year may need adjustment the next.
The best thing you can ‘buy’ at the start is not a hive: it is the attitude of accepting that you do not know and the habit of asking ‘why?’ before copying a recipe. This technical humility prevents haste, reduces silly errors, and makes you a better beekeeper from the very first minute.
And one final point, to balance everything above. I have insisted that this is precision animal husbandry, not romanticism, and I stand by that. But precision does not mean obsession with honey yield. Honey is the result of doing it well, not the goal of every visit. Beekeepers who last decades are not those who harvest the most: they are those who enjoy observing the colony, understanding it, and watching it thrive. If you reduce everything to production, you burn out. If you enjoy the process, you stay for life.
