From never having opened a hive to living off them

It is built to be read at two speeds. A beginner goes through it from start to finish and finds the learning order already threaded together: what a colony is, what equipment is needed, how an inspection is done. Someone who already keeps bees uses it as a reference book and goes straight to the unit they need — health, nutrition, processing — without rereading what came before. And there is a third reader who only shows up in the reviews: the one who will never keep bees but works with what comes out of them, cooking included, and wants to understand where each product comes from.

02 · WHAT IS INSIDE

The ten units, told rather than listed

The bees and Getting started cover colony biology and the beginning: equipment, siting, the first hive. Management is the unit on inspections through the year — what to look at on each frame and at which point in the season, including coming out of winter. Health and Nutrition deal with what decides whether a colony reaches spring alive. Hive products and Honey and its processing run through pollen, royal jelly, wax and propolis, and the whole harvesting and packing chain. It closes with Threats to beekeeping, Bee botany and Professional beekeeping.

03 · WRITTEN IN SPANISH, FOR SPAIN

The botany and the calendar are the Iberian ones

This is the difference you notice in use, and a reader summed it up better than we could: the standard manuals in circulation are written around a different flora and a different calendar. Here the nectar flows described are those of the Iberian peninsula, and the management timings — when to stimulate, when to harvest, when to winter the hives — match our seasons. For a beekeeper working in Spain that stops being an editorial detail: it is the difference between mentally translating every chapter and applying it as written. The book itself is in Spanish: there is no edition in other languages.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

17 × 24 cm, a 3 cm spine and 926 g — this is a desk book, not a pocket one. First edition March 2022. Authors include Antonio Gómez Pajuelo, Fina Gonell Galindo and Joshua Ivars. It is illustrated with colour photography throughout, which is what makes a unit like the health chapter usable: a frame with a problem is recognised by seeing it, not by reading about it.
