How to choose the glass jar for your honey
Choosing a glass jar shouldn't be done just by price or by capacity. The packaging also sells: it conveys quality, protects the product and conditions how you'll fill, label, transport and store it. For honey, for example, I'd first look at the real capacity in grams, the type of mouth, the compatible lid and the image you want to project. A plain jar makes labelling much easier and looks clean on the shelf; one with a honeycomb pattern communicates a beekeeping product better; an orcio or gourmet format can help you position a special honey better; and small formats work very well for samples, batches, gifts or tastings. Not all jars work the same for honey, jam, preserves or creams: each product calls for a different mouth, lid and presentation.
My advice is to buy the jar thinking about the whole chain, not just the filling. Before choosing, I'd check the Twist-Off mouth diameter, the exact lid compatibility, ease of labelling, glass strength, packaging, stacking, cost per unit and sales format. And here I'll take a clear stand: saving a few cents on a jar that then labels badly, seals worse or breaks more in transport ends up costing you. If you're going to sell food, I'd always use new lids, food-grade and well stored; no reused lids for a commercial product. For preserves or hot processes, you also have to make sure the jar-lid set works well in that use. A good jar doesn't improve a bad honey, but a bad choice of packaging can indeed take value away from a good honey.
Glass jars
Seventy-five references, from 33 ml to 1 kg. Everything you have to decide here fits into two numbers: the capacity and the finish code.
The finish code comes first
TO followed by a number is the mouth diameter in millimetres, running from TO43 to TO110. The lid has to match that number exactly. And watch out for the variant that catches people: "DTO", "deep" or "high skirt" does not cross over with the standard finish of the same diameter — a TO63 Deep will not take an ordinary TO63 lid. Lids are in lids and closures.
Millilitres are not grams
Honey weighs about 1.4 times its volume. That is why a 500 ml jar is sold as 700 g and a 720 ml one as 1 kg, and why the names mix the two units. If you are labelling, the number that rules is the net weight, not the capacity of the glass.
Enter by what you will use it for
- Honey jars — the honeycomb formats and the plain 500 g and 1 kg ones.
- Jams and preserves — the same glass, different capacities and a different closure.
- Small (33 to 390 ml) — samples, tastings and gifts. Large — from half a kilo up.
- Pallets — from around 1,000 units, where the price per jar drops to less than half.
Jars are supplied in packs of 9 to 40 units depending on the format, and the price on the page is for the complete pack. Check whether the lid is included: some references come with it and others need it ordered separately.
