01 · HOW MUCH HONEY IT HOLDS

33 ml is about 45 grams

Capacity is given in volume and honey is sold by weight, so the sum has to be done: a litre of honey weighs around 1.4 kg, which puts these 33 ml at about 45 g a jar. A pack of 40 therefore shares out a little under two kilos. It is the portion for a tasting or a gift, not for a sale.

02 · THE MOUTH RULES

TO 43, and only TO 43

Which lid fits is decided not by the make of the jar but by the diameter of the mouth: here it is TO 43, and any standard twist-off lid of that size will do. At 43 mm across and 40.5 mm tall it is almost as wide as it is high, so the front you have for a label is small and is often solved with a lid label.

03 · WHAT IT IS USED FOR

Tastings, fairs and multi-honey sets

This is the sample format: the one on the fair table, where people taste before they buy; the one that goes with a big jar in a gift set; and the one that lets you put together an assortment of several different honeys without the price of the set running away. In catering, an individual portion also does away with the shared jar, which is what has made this size a breakfast classic.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Supplied in packs of 40 and without lids. Wash and dry the jar before filling and leave a finger of air at the top so it seals properly. And bear in mind that honey crystallises in a small jar just as it does in a big one: this is a format to use soon, not to store.
