Hive tools and frame grips
Hive tool is an essential tool to have with you when examining bees. It is used for numoreous tasks including prizing boxes apart, lfting frames and scrapping unwanted brace comb and propolis from top bars.
Hive tools come in two main types, the standard and the J. Both are made from hardened or stainless steel and both have a wider, flat, beveled end. The other end of the standard hive tool widens out and curves over, with a beveled edge which is used as a scraper.
The tail end of the J hive tool curves around to form a flattened hook and is used to lever up frames. It is more effective for this than the standard tool, any corner of which can be used to raise the frame lug. Make sure the hive tool is comfortable to hold and try out both types before deciding which one suits you best. You need to get used to keeping your hive tool in your hand at all times during colony inspections.
