01 · HOW TO SCRAPE

Blade laid flat, not on its edge

The width of the blade is what makes it useful: held almost flat and pushed steadily, it spreads the pressure and clears a large surface in one pass. On its edge it scores the timber and gets less done. This is the tool for the rebates, the edges, the floors and the workroom bench — and propolis comes off better cold, before the sun softens it.

02 · WHAT IT WILL NOT DO

It does not replace a hive tool

With no heel and no hook there is nowhere to bear against to break open a propolised box or lift a stuck frame. If the joint will not give, change the spot or change the tool rather than forcing it: a straight blade used as a lever bends, and the rivet in the handle is where you notice first.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Treat the handle for what it is: dry the blade when you finish and do not put it away wet or leave it soaking, because the rivet works loose and the wood opens up. If you are only taking one tool to the apiary, make it the hooked hive tool; this is the second one, the one for cleaning. For fine bench work there is the 25 cm one-piece multipurpose scraper.
