01 · THE SIZE

24 cm high and 10 cm across: measure before you decide

The 24 cm is the whole smoker, lid closed, and the body is 10 cm in diameter. That is the standard hand-smoker format: enough for an inspection of 5 to 30 hives on one well-packed load. If you plan to chain apiaries all morning without reloading, what you need is not another material but more body: a smoker of greater diameter and height.

02 · FUEL AND COOL SMOKE

What to burn and how to keep the ember alive

For slow, soft smoke: bark pellets, dry shavings or pine needles. To get going: hessian or undyed natural burlap, or a dry pine cone. Dried lavender works well during delicate flows. Never: plastics, treated timber or too much resinous wood. The rhythm: light it at the bottom, add layers gradually, two or three pumps and 10-15 seconds of waiting, and work from downwind. If the smoke comes out hot, a handful of green grass or fresh leaves in the mouth of the cone cools it before it reaches the bees.

03 · WHAT STAINLESS FIXES

The material solves corrosion; the mechanics are still a budget model's

Stainless steel removes the galvanised problem — rust where the zinc layer is damaged — and takes a proper wash. What does not change is the rest: the bellows give just enough air and lose a little at the joint with the body, the lid has no catch (it simply sits and seats), and the hinge and ring are the first parts to suffer under hard use. Knowing that, it is a smoker that lasts seasons; expecting a workshop-grade professional, it disappoints.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is the sensible buy if you want stainless without paying professional prices, run 5 to 30 hives, or live somewhere damp or coastal where galvanised suffers. If you are after more burn time per load or a firm catch on the lid, move up a grade; if budget rules and there is no salt in the air, the galvanised one does the same job for less.
