Bee colony health

It is worth being clear here about what each thing is, because the trade name does not always say.

What these products are

They are supplements and complementary feed intended for bees: essential oils, plant extracts, amino acids, live yeasts. They are not veterinary medicines and cannot be used as such. They add nutrients or plant compounds to the syrup; what they do not do is replace a treatment when there is a diagnosis.

If you suspect nosemosis or another notifiable disease, the right course is diagnosis and whatever your vet indicates. A supplement can accompany; it does not replace.

When they make sense

At the colony's moments of stress: coming out of winter, after migratory movement, after a long period with no nectar, or in a colony that is recovering. They are usually given diluted in the syrup, following the dose on the container — more does not give a better result.

What is not replaceable

No supplement fixes a hive with no stores, no pollen or an exhausted queen. Basic nutrition comes first: if feed is missing, start there and leave the supplement for afterwards.
