01 · WHAT IT IS

A plant-based addition to feeding, with its legal category clear

The composition is short and can be read in full: plant bark extract, peppermint oil and purified water, with citric acid (E330) as additive. Only highly refined plant ingredients, no pollen and nothing of animal origin, and the maker declares it leaves no residue in honey or wax. It is registered and sold as a complementary feed for Apis mellifera, which is exactly what it is: an addition that goes along with autumn and spring feeding. Anything to do with diagnosing or treating a hive disease belongs elsewhere: with an authorised veterinary medicine and with your vet.

02 · HOW TO GIVE IT

1 ml per hive, and the sums for big batches

The dose is 1 ml, about 20 drops, per hive and per application, dissolved in about 200 ml of 1:1 syrup and given in the feeder; mixed into pollen substitute patty at 1 ml per 500 g; or dissolved in that same 200 ml of syrup and sprayed onto the bees. This is the format for anyone who makes syrup in batches: the ratio is the same, 1 ml per 200 ml, so a 20-litre tank takes 100 ml and the sums scale with no surprises. Shake the bottle before each use: it is a plant extract and it settles.

03 · WHEN, AND HOW FAR IT GOES

Two doses in spring and two in autumn, ten days apart

The annual protocol is four applications: two at the start of autumn and two in spring, ten days apart within each pair. Those are the two windows when the colony is being fed and when it makes sense to go along with that feeding, and the two that fall outside the honey flow, which is the rule that counts: it is given in the autumn round and before the spring flows, not with the supers on. At 1 ml per hive and dose, the 500 ml cover the four doses for 125 hives, or a two-dose season for 250. It sits between the 200 ml bottle and the litre: same product, and the cost per hive falls with the size.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Once opened it goes in the fridge until the next round; sealed, in a cool dark place, with a declared shelf life of four years. If you have a veterinary medicine in use, its own label sets the schedule: this neither changes nor replaces it.
