When you hit the apiary in late summer and you can tell there are bees, but brood is dropping and stores are not building the way you want, that’s when winter is basically decided. Syrup helps, sure. What really makes a difference is when that syrup is not just sugar, it also supports gut balance, resilience and appetite without winding colonies up.

HiveAlive Concentrate 2L is a liquid feed supplement you add to syrup (and it can also be mixed into candy or protein patties). It’s made specifically for honeybees, based on a blend of selected Irish seaweed extracts (OceaShield), plus thyme and a precise amount of lemongrass to boost attractiveness without overdoing it. The goal is simple: better intake and better digestive support.

The key idea is “inside out”. Seaweed isn’t a gimmick. In animal nutrition it’s been used for years because it’s naturally rich in minerals, vitamins and bioactive compounds. For bees, you’re aiming for better nutrition, a steadier gut, stronger overall robustness. When the gut is stable, colonies tend to use feed more efficiently and cope better with weather swings, nectar gaps and late-season stress.

According to trials referenced by the manufacturer (including published work in the sector), using it in autumn and spring is associated with higher colony population and better overwinter survival compared with syrup alone. In real terms: a better chance of coming into spring with a brood box that’s moving, and fewer colonies that feel “on the edge”.

How to use (practical): add about 10 mL per 1 gallon (3.8 L) of syrup, which is 2.6 mL per litre. Mix thoroughly before feeding. If your syrup is cold or very thick, take the time to blend it properly. You can also add it to candy or protein patties when you want full support in autumn (energy + protein) or a clean spring build-up.

Limitations and common sense: HiveAlive is a nutritional supplement. It doesn’t replace varroa treatments or good management. Stick to the dose and avoid spills and open feeding, especially in dry periods, to reduce the risk of robbing.
