A small box that is really a temporary hive, a nucleus has a fixed floor but the roof can be replaced with wire mesh to preent overheating when the bees are being transported. On one side is a small hole that has to be blocked up with either a piece of rolled-up newspaper, a cork, grass, or something similar when the bees are being moved.
The nuc box will come complete with then thousand worker bees, a laying queen, and five frames containing brood, pollen and honey. The nucleus of bees is able to survive in the box for up to five days, but after this time, the colony will run out of space because the queen will be busy laying. It is vital, therefore, that everything is set up before your receive delivery of your bees. To put the bees in their new home is a simple process that simply involves transferring the five frames into the brood box in your hive and then leaving the bees to carry on their natural cycle without being disturbed.
