Details of Polystyrene mating nuc

A mating nuc is the queen rearer's batch tool: it lets you raise queens with the minimum amount of bees and frames. Each unit houses a virgin queen or a queen cell until she mates and starts laying, so you can manage every batch separately in the apiary. The insulated polystyrene body keeps temperature stable inside a small volume — a critical factor that separates a healthy batch from one that fails at the first sudden temperature drop.

🔧 Insulated polystyrene body and lid

Thermal insulating material that buffers external temperature swings and reduces the risk of condensation. In compartments as small as a mating nuc, any sudden rise or drop compromises mating: insulation keeps the chamber within a stable thermal range while the queen flies out and starts laying on her return.

📐 Three mini frames in a compact format

Three model-specific mini frames in a compact chamber of 24 × 15 × 17 cm approx. Designed to work with a small number of bees per unit — nurse bees draw wax quickly on the reduced format and the queen has enough surface to start laying on her return from the mating flight. Lets you run several batches in parallel in very little space.

⚙️ Built-in feeder with queen excluder

Separate compartment to supply syrup or candy without opening the brood area. The excluder grid on top stops bees from building comb inside the feeder and gives them safe access to food with no risk of drowning. In mating nucs, reserves run out fast due to the small volume — being able to top up food without disturbing the unit is key to keeping the batch alive.

🔄 Disc entrance, adjustable ventilation and removable floor

Multi-position rotating disc entrance on the front: closed when introducing the queen, ventilated for transport, open for mating. An extra sliding panel regulates airflow to prevent condensation. The plastic floor is easily removed to fill the unit with bees at the start of the batch, to integrate the mini nuc into a queenless hive, or to clean between cycles.

⚠️ Important about mating: a mating nuc is a management tool, it does not guarantee mating. Success depends on the population of young bees, food reserves, mature drones available, weather (reference: ~20 °C, clear sky, low wind) and unit health. Planning drone rearing about 5 weeks ahead and keeping reserves topped up are the two levers that move the result most.
