Collecting venom has a cost, and the colony pays it

The collector works with a gentle electrical stimulus that makes the bees sting a glass plate: they leave the venom there and do not lose their sting. It sounds harmless, and it is not entirely. A collection session leaves the colony agitated for hours, with alarm pheromone running high, and that is paid for in foraging and in temperament over the following days.

So if you get into this, do it only with strong colonies, never close to wintering and never on the same colony twice in a row. And square it with the neighbours first: a freshly stimulated colony is aggressive and does not care who walks past. This is production equipment for someone with enough hives to afford it, not for experimenting with the three colonies in the garden.

Here we bring together the equipment used by those who work with hive products in this field: devices for collecting bee venom, for vaporising propolis and for hive air inhalation, along with field accessories. These are working tools; what is done afterwards with what has been collected falls outside our scope and is a matter for each professional.

Apitherapy is the name given to the traditional use of hive products. In this category you will not find statements about their effects: you will find the machines, their materials, their dimensions and how they work, which is what you need in order to choose.

Main Products Available in Apitherapy

  • Bee venom collector: electric collector placed at the hive entrance. A low-intensity pulse prompts the bees to deposit venom onto a glass plate, from which it is later scraped dry, without harming the bees or opening the hive.
  • Bug bite Thing® bee venom vacuum: hand-held suction tool, with no batteries and no chemicals. Placed over the sting site, pulling the plunger draws out by vacuum the fluid deposited under the skin. Reusable and washable, it fits in a pocket.
  • Propo Steam Propolis Vaporizer: vaporizer unit for working propolis with heat.
  • Api-aerosol II Beehive Air Inhalation: equipment that channels air from inside the hive to a mask by means of a turbine and a filter system, without having to handle the frames.

What to look at before buying

For the venom collector, check how many hives you can work at once, the power supply and the type of collecting surface, since the cleanliness of the scraping depends on it. For the Api-aerosol, check the turbine flow rate and filter maintenance. For the Propo Steam, the load capacity per cycle. And the Bug bite Thing® is a field accessory: it weighs very little and travels alongside your smoker and hive tool.

All the equipment in this category is intended for beekeepers already managing hives. If you are starting out, the venom collector and the Api-aerosol call for prior practice with colonies: they are used on live hives, and basic handling is best mastered first.

We do not offer sessions either, nor do we refer people to practitioners. If that is what brought you here, this is not the page: what is sold here is the device, not the service.

Can bee venom be handled on your own?

Not with the venom. A bee sting can cause severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, which is a medical emergency and can occur in someone previously stung without incident. Sensitisation gives no warning.

For that reason any practice involving venom belongs to qualified professionals, with the means to deal with a reaction on the spot. The collector is production equipment and is used at the apiary with the usual protective gear.

And a legal note: for these products there are no authorised health claims (Reg. EC 1924/2006), so we make none and cannot confirm any you may read elsewhere.
