Beehive markers

Without a number, a hive is "the one at the back on the left", and that stops working the day you have thirty. Marking is what turns an apiary into a record.

What you lose without numbering

Everything you want to follow over time: which hive swarmed, which produced most, which keeps carrying varroa, where that genetics came from, when each was treated. Without an identifier, that information lives in your head and evaporates between visits.

Fixed or magnetic numbers

  • Nailed plastic (€1.45) — cheap and permanent. It identifies the box: if you move the colony, the number stays with the timber.
  • Magnetic 0-9 (€1.75) — changed in seconds. They mark state, not the box: queen year, treatment done, hive to check. Many beekeepers use both at once.

The detail most people forget

Identification is not only your own organisation: apiary regulations require hives to carry the holding code legibly marked. If you are buying identifiers, check first what format your region requires — that way you buy once.
