01 · WHAT IT IS FOR

In a row of identical hives, colour is what you see from ten metres

An apiary is a row of boxes in the same shade, and writing «third from the left» in the notebook is how errors get into the records. A coloured disc on the front turns each hive into a reference you read at a glance, without walking up or opening anything: to go straight to the one you had marked, or to split the apiary into colour codes.

02 · FITTING

Screwed on, which is why it can move between boxes

It has four fixing holes and goes on with whatever screws the material calls for: a short woodscrew in timber, a screw and washer in plastic or polystyrene, without tightening until the wall deforms. Being screwed rather than glued, it moves to another box when you reorganise the apiary — which painting the box does not allow. And magnetic numbers go on the disc, changeable without taking anything apart.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY

This is visual identification, not legal identification: it does not replace the compulsory hive marking your national rules require. The disc goes as well as that marking, not instead of it.
