An escape is cheap in euros and expensive in miles

For under two euros you save yourself brushing super by super, and that sum adds up on its own. But there is a cost not in the price: it makes you go twice. Once to fit it the evening before and again the next day to collect. If the apiary is ten minutes away, it is the best buy in the catalogue. If it is an hour and a half, that second trip can cost you more than a blower.

And when it does pay, two conditions decide whether it works or you waste the trip. It is no use if there is brood in the super: the nurses will not leave the brood and in the morning you find the super just as full. And it is no use in extreme heat, because if the colony is fanning the bees stay where they are. Allow 24 hours, no more: with the super isolated for several days the honey cools and then extracts harder.

For under €2 you save yourself brushing super by super. The escape is a one-way valve: the bee goes down into the nest and cannot find her way back. It goes between super and brood box the evening before harvest, and by the next day the super is practically empty.

Which to choose

  • Porter (€0.95) — the two-spring classic. Cheap and effective, but jams with propolis or drones; needs checking.
  • Round (€1.15) and NICOT® rhomboid (€1.29) — a maze with no moving springs: it does not jam and clears faster.
  • 8 exits (€1.50) — for full supers; it spreads the flow and empties in fewer hours.

The two conditions people forget

It does not work if there is brood in the super: the nurses will not abandon the brood and nothing clears. And it does not work in extreme heat: if the colony is fanning, the bees stay put.

Allow 24 hours, no more: with the super isolated for days the honey cools and becomes harder to extract. Next it goes to the uncapper and the extractor. The other route is the brush.

Why has the escape not cleared my super?

Almost always for one of two reasons. There is brood in the super: the nurses will not leave it and will not go down, however long you wait. Or it is too hot: if the colony is fanning, the bees stay where they are.

The third cause, if it is a Porter type, is that it has jammed with propolis or a drone — he does not fit through the springs and blocks the way. Maze types, round or rhomboid, do not have that problem. And allow 24 hours, no more.
