Dadant Blatt Beehives

Dadant Blatt is the French format and the standard across much of continental Europe. It is a Dadant with the European frame size, and that difference from Dadant US is the one to be clear about before buying.

Why it is chosen

A large, single-piece brood box: the queen has room to lay without you limiting her, and the colony winters in a volume that heats well. Above go half-height supers — the 47×16 cm frame — which weigh half a full super when loaded. Across a season of two hundred supers, that half adds up.

What to check before ordering

That the frame is French Dadant Blatt and not Dadant US: they are different formats and do not interchange. Here you will find the straight frame (€1.22), the half-super one (€1.09) and the Premium horizontal tensioned (€1.45), which arrives with the wire already under tension.

Fixed or movable

The fixed hive with no super, brood box only, still has its place: for anyone not chasing super honey, for starter nucs or for rearing work. It is cheaper and simpler.

The timber

Cryptomeria is light, stable and stands damp well. It costs more than pine and lasts longer, and if you migrate, the weight of the empty box counts on every trip.

Are Dadant Blatt hives fixed-site? Can they be moved?

Most of the Dadant Blatt hives you will see are the fixed-site build, and that does not mean they have to stay put. Fixed-site describes the construction: the floor is a separate part and the boxes are plain, with the handhold cut into the timber, rather than the integrated floor and battens of a migratory hive.

To move one you fit fixing clips between floor, brood box and supers, and the whole thing travels as a unit. What you gain in the meantime is handling: changing the floor, running a double brood box or replacing a single part is immediate — which is exactly how the French format is usually worked.
