Dadant Blatt brood frame in spruce, with the stainless wire already threaded vertically and plain straight side bars.
This is the French size, the one used across France and Italy: a 47 cm top bar. The Spanish standard is the Dadant US at 48 cm, and that single centimetre decides whether the frame drops in or hangs on its lugs. Measure before you order.
01 · COMPATIBILITY
Measure the top bar: 47 cm is Blatt, 48 cm is US
Take a frame you already run and measure the top bar end to end. If it reads 47 cm, this is your frame. If it reads 48 cm, you are on Dadant US and this one will not do: it will hang on its lugs or refuse to seat. It is not a British National frame either, and do not mix it up with the Blatt super frame at 47 × 16 cm — this is the brood frame, 47 × 30 cm.
02 · WIRING
Stainless wire in a vertical zigzag, already threaded
The frame arrives with the stainless steel wire already threaded through the holes in the top bar and bottom bar, running top to bottom in a zigzag. Stainless will not pit in a damp honey house. Check the tension before you fit foundation: the wire has to sit taut, because it is the only thing holding the comb when the extractor picks up speed and dense honey — heather, chestnut, ivy — pulls outwards. If it feels slack, tension it before embedding the foundation with a spur embedder or a transformer.
03 · BUILD
Untreated spruce, seasoned before assembly
The timber is untreated spruce from Ukrainian forests, seasoned under control before assembly: moisture left in the wood is what later warps a frame and leaves it rubbing against its neighbour. Because it comes with no factory treatment, the finish is your call — in the brood box most beekeepers leave it bare. The working sizes are a 470 mm top bar by 300 mm deep, with 435 mm of clearance between side bars, which is the opening your foundation has to cover, and a 25 × 20 mm top bar over 10 mm side bars.
04 · SPACING
Straight side bars: something else sets the spacing
Look at the side bar: it is straight, the same thickness all the way down. That means the frame does not space itself. If the frames you already run have the side bar widened at the top, those are Hoffman and they self-space on contact; straight ones do not. To hold bee space you need a castellated spacer in the box, where each slot fixes one lug, or clip-on converters on the top bar — the ones for 25 mm bars fit this one. And do not mix straight and Hoffman in the same box: you get uneven gaps and the bees fill them with brace comb.
05 · BEFORE YOU BUY
Sold individually: order as many as you need. Each frame weighs 0.55 kg, so 100 frames come to 55 kg.

No. The foundation is not slotted in from above: it is embedded into the vertical wires with a spur embedder or a transformer, which is why you should check first that the wire is taut; if it feels slack, tension it first. That is how a wired frame is built: the sheet is bonded to the wire along its whole height, which is what stands up to the extractor, instead of hanging from a groove.
