Hardware for beehives

It is the hive's ironmongery: parts costing cents that decide whether the box lasts ten years or three.

What breaks first

The handles and the catches. A full super weighs 25-30 kg and travels from ground to trailer several times a season; the badly fixed handle is what gives, usually with the load in the air. If you are refurbishing old hives, start there.

Floor ventilation

The ventilation grid does two things at once: it lets varroa fall out of the colony's reach and it takes out the moisture the colony generates. Winter kills more through condensation dripping onto the cluster than through dry cold: a hive sealed up tight does not protect, it waterlogs.

Blind entrance and transport

The blind entrance (€0.19) closes the hive for moving. With it you need the staples or straps that bind floor, brood box, supers and roof together: on a bend, an unstrapped hive opens. And it opens with the bees shut in and hot.

A buying note

Buy the same model, for the whole apiary. An apiary where every hive has a different catch is an apiary where you never have the right spare in the van.

Entrances are in hive entrances; the rest in hive accessories.
