Details of Spring fastener pair (fix-elem)

One of those small parts that costs little and saves you a lot of trouble — keeping the crown board or a super from coming loose at the wrong moment. The fix-elem is a galvanised wire bent into a zig-zag pattern, with a closed eyelet at one end and a double-bent terminal at the other. You screw the eyelet onto one part of the hive, hook the other end onto a screw on the adjacent part, and the spring tension of the zig-zag holds the two together. Works equally well during migratory beekeeping or on permanent apiaries exposed to strong winds.

🔗 Spring-loaded grip that withstands lorry and gale

The zig-zag bend acts as a spring: it tensions as soon as you hook the double terminal onto the screw and keeps both parts together even if the stack vibrates, tilts or takes a knock. You feel the difference loading hives onto the lorry for a heather move, or in coastal apiaries where a sudden gust can lift the crown board clean off.

🏗️ Mount on the side opposite the entrance

When fitting it, always set it on the opposite side to the hive entrance: that way, when you open the colony for an inspection, you do it from the side where the foragers are not coming and going. To screw the eyelet to the crown board or roof, 20 mm screws work well; for the brood-box rim or super use 30 mm screws (not supplied).

🔄 Fits any hive format

Format-independent: it works just as well on Langstroth on Langstroth as on National with a varroa floor or Commercial with a metal-clad roof. Given its size and the tension range the spring allows, it fits crown-board to brood-box, brood-box to super, super to super, and brood-box to floor. The universal solution when you don’t want a different fastener for each hive type in the apiary.

⚠️ Half right-handed, half left-handed

The zig-zag is asymmetric — each piece is bent towards one side. If you order an even number of units and don’t tell us otherwise, we send you half in right-handed and half in left-handed format, so you can fit two fasteners per hive on opposite faces. If you order an odd quantity or need them all the same (e.g. all right-handed), please note it in the order comments.
