The pallet saving only exists if you empty it

Bringing the jar down to seventeen cents sounds like an obvious decision, and it is if you move that volume. The costly mistake is not buying dear: it is buying cheap in a format you then do not sell. A pallet of the wrong jar cannot be returned, does not resell well and takes up space for years — it stops being a saving and becomes capital standing still in a corner of the store. Before the unit price, work out how many jars of that exact format you filled last year.

And once you have it, the enemy is damp. The pallet comes in cardboard and damp cardboard gives way: the stack leans and you end up with broken glass on the store floor. On a pallet, never straight on the ground, in a dry place and not stacked beyond what the bottom box can bear. If it has to sit for months, look at the stack now and then: a corner starting to sag warns you before it falls.

How far the jar price drops

A pallet of 2,097 A370 jars costs €365: that is €0.17 per jar. The one with 1,016 one-kilo honeycomb jars, mouth 77, at €317, works out at €0.31. Bought in a pack of 25, that same type of jar sits between €0.39 and €0.46 per unit. In other words, between 40 and 60 % less per jar.

That is the whole calculation: if you fill more than a thousand jars a year in the same format, the pallet pays for itself. Below that, what you save goes on storage.

What fits on a pallet

It depends on the format and runs from 936 to 2,233 units. The small 370 ml ones reach 2,097; the 720 ml ones stop at 1,183; the one-kilo ones, around 1,000. Before ordering, measure where it will be unloaded: a full pallet does not go through a house door and is not split.

Check whether lids are included

Several references are "without lids" and say so in the name. At those unit prices, forgetting the lids is the expensive mistake: count them separately in lids and closures and check the mouth matches.

How many jars are on a pallet and how much space does it take?

It depends on the format: from 936 units on the 1 kg Apiari pallet up to 2,097 on the A370 jar pallet. A 1 kg pallet is around 1,016 units.

The question worth asking first is about space: a pallet is a full load, it arrives by lorry and needs an unloading point and a dry store where it will not be in the way for months. If you have nowhere to put it, the saving per unit goes on moving boxes.

Do pallets include the lids?

Not always, and this is the costliest mistake in this category. Some references state it explicitly — the plain V720 pallet comes without lids — and others include them. Check the product page before ordering: ending up with two thousand jars and no lids stops your packing dead.

And if you buy them separately, the figure that must match is the mouth diameter. The 1 kg comb-pattern jars exist in 77 and 82 mouth, and an 82 lid will not close a 77 jar.
