Before ordering: brand and model

An extractor is not generic. Lids, baskets, legs and shafts are specific to brand and frame count — a SAF® lid does not fit a Quarti®. Before ordering, check the plate or reference on yours; if there is none, measure the drum diameter and count the frames. That detail saves a return.

The upgrade that changes the work most

The variable-speed motor. A single-speed extractor forces you to start slowly by hand or to break combs; with a variator you raise the speed gradually and new combs survive. If it also has a programmer, the cycle (soft start, reverse, stop) runs itself while you uncap.

What breaks first

The lid — acrylic, so you can see inside without stopping — and the outlet tap. The protective covers are what stops the drum from taking on dust and damp between seasons, which is when they really deteriorate.
