Explaining a hive in words is hard; showing one is instant. This category exists for that: for classrooms, school visits, fairs and homes with children.

The three formats and what each is for

• Life-cycle figures (€15.95) — egg, larva, pupa, adult. This is what makes it obvious at a glance that a bee is not born a bee, and why a larva under three days old matters so much. For the youngest it is the best starting point.

A note for anyone running visits

An observation hive contains live bees: it needs real management — an outside exit, temperature control, replenishment — and it is not shelf material. If you will use it in a classroom or at a fair, plan who maintains it between events.

What actually gets across

Almost nobody leaves a visit remembering figures. They leave remembering that a hive is a single organism and that without pollination a good part of what they eat does not exist. That is the message that pays, and the one that brings someone back to your stall to buy your honey.
