01 · IN THE LIGHT, THEY PROPOLISE IT

The management nobody mentions

A colony keeps its nest in the dark. As soon as a pane gives it continuous light, the bees coat it with propolis and wax until nothing shows — and scraping that off every time is wasted work.

That is why an observation hive is kept covered and uncovered only to show it. With that routine the glass stays clear all season; without it, the view is gone in weeks.

02 · IT STILL HAS AN ENTRANCE

Where you can put it and where you can't

It is a living hive: the bees come and go through the entrance like in any other. The panes close the box up, but that does not make it airtight.

For an outdoor fair or a teaching apiary it works straight away. Indoors, the entrance has to reach the outside through a tube or a wall duct — otherwise the bees come out into the room.

03 · WHAT'S IN IT, AND WHICH FRAMES

It comes complete: mesh floor, brood body and half super glazed on all four sides, crown board, chalet roof and all the frames.

The format is Dadant Blatt, the same one ordinary Dadant equipment uses, so its frames are the usual ones. That matters more than it sounds for what comes next.

04 · HOW YOU STOCK IT

With frames from your own apiary

You do not buy a glass hive and find bees inside. You stock it by transferring a nucleus or moving brood frames with their queen from a colony you already keep.

And because the frame is standard Dadant, that transfer is a change of box, not a trim job or a bodge. If you are going to exhibit it, set it up a few days ahead so the colony settles.

05 · SIZE AND WEIGHT

Before you load it into the car

It measures 605 × 550 × 670 mm and travels at a declared weight of 26 kg. With glass on four sides it is carried upright and chocked, not laid down.

The timber is kiln-dried first-grade spruce with half-lap joints: light for what it is, but the glass is what dictates how you handle it.
