60 kg/m³ EPS DENSITY | 25 mm THICKNESS |
High-density expanded polystyrene division board with a wooden frame, handled like any other frame, that closes the nest down to the colony's real size.
Not just for wintering: it works just as well in summer.
01 · WHAT IT ACTUALLY DOES
A colony puts a good share of its effort into holding the nest temperature, and that effort depends on the volume it has to condition. Closing the box with an insulating division board fits the hive to the real size of the population: less air to warm in winter and less to cool in summer, and the insulating wall also damps the temperature swing against the outside. That helps the colony spend less on thermoregulation; what it then does with the energy saved depends on the queen, the flow and its health, not on the board.
02 · 60 kg/m³ EPS, NOT PACKING FOAM
The figure that matters is not that it is polystyrene, it is the 60 kg/m³ density: packing EPS runs at 10-15, and that is the difference between a sheet the bees pull apart and a part that survives the hive. With 25 mm of thickness and the wooden frame that gives it rigidity and something to grip, it handles like any frame — out, moved, back in, without ceremony. According to the manufacturer, that density is also what gives it its resistance to being chewed.
03 · CHOOSE IT BY YOUR FRAME
It is made in Layens, Dadant, Dadant Blatt and Langstroth, and each format is a separate reference: it is not a universal piece you cut down, but a frame built to each hive. Choose by the frame you use, not by the generic name — Dadant and Dadant Blatt are not the same and carry separate references. And a note from daily use: many people fit two per hive, one on each side of the nest, rather than a single one against the wall.
04 · BEFORE YOU BUY
It earns its keep in both hard seasons: closing the nest down for wintering and equally in high summer, where it damps the heat coming through the sunlit wall. A snug nest is also one the colony covers and ventilates better, and that reduces the conditions in which mould appears on the outer frames. If you need the exact size for your format before ordering, write to us and we will take it with the piece in front of us — the page carries a single figure and the four formats do not measure the same.
