Details of Insulating plastic hive wrap (pack 20 units)

In March a small colony does not spend its honey on growing: it spends it heating the space it has to spare.

Pack of 20 plastic quilts, 54 × 45 cm. They cover the part of the nest the colony does not yet occupy: they do not wrap the hive, they cut down the volume the bees have to heat.

01 · HOW IT IS USED

It moves as the brood grows

It goes on top of the frames, covering the ones with no brood yet, and is shifted along as the nest spreads. It is a moving part: its job is to give ground.

It is the same principle as narrowing the entrance: the less space has to be held at 35 degrees, the more honey is left for raising brood. Hence its use in spring build-up and freshly made nucs.

With the brood chamber developed, it still serves as a cover cloth when adding supers.

02 · PLASTIC AND WATER

What to watch

Plastic over the frames is a cold surface, and the vapour rising from the colony condenses on its underside. Set right, nothing happens; set wrong, that water drips onto the brood — exactly what nobody wants in March.

So do not seal the hive at the top: keep the inner cover's ventilation and lift the quilt now and then to check for water. If condensation builds up, take it out.
