62 mm insulating cushion for Dadant 10-frame RBC® hives — high-density XPS + aluminised PE film >85%. Stabilises the internal climate year-round: holds cluster heat in winter, reflects solar radiation in summer, cuts condensation. Replaces two standard 28 mm cushions. Made by BeevolutionX Tech. ⚠️ Remove during formic-acid treatments.
Insulating cushion 62 mm thick for the roof of a Dadant 10-frame hive — combines high-density XPS with an aluminised heat-reflective film on the upper face. Made in the BeevolutionX Tech workshops (La Salvetat-sur-Agout, France) to the proprietary RBC® (Ruche Basse Consommation) standard. Stabilises the internal climate year-round: holds the cluster heat in winter, reflects solar radiation in summer and cuts the condensation that forms on the roof whenever there is a sharp thermal gap between brood and outside.
In winter the real threat is not cold — it is condensation: the cluster produces heat and water vapour that condense on a cold roof and drip back onto the bees. Cold-wet kills colonies. The cushion breaks that thermal bridge with 62 mm of XPS. In summer, the aluminised film reflects 85%+ of incoming infrared radiation — a hive in full sun stays several degrees below an exposed roof and fewer bees hang out at the entrance as a beard. One element covers both critical seasons.
The core is extruded polystyrene (XPS) at 100 kg/m³ — rot-proof, rigid, does not absorb moisture even pressed against a damp roof. The outer jacket is an aluminised polyethylene film > 85% — adds the radiant barrier, reinforces the vapour tightness of the XPS and protects the foam from scratches, propolis and repeated handling. Cleaning is a plain water rinse — no aggressive chemicals required.
Fits directly on top of the thermal crown board (écharpe RBC® if you are in the BeevolutionX ecosystem) and under the hive roof. The aluminised face always goes upwards, against the roof: the reflective surface protects the roof from overheating and bounces the radiation coming through the metal cover back out. A single 62 mm piece replaces two stacked 28 mm standard XPS cushions — less assembly, fewer joints for air to slip through.
The aluminised film is sensitive to formic-acid vapours. If you run Formic Pro or any other formic treatment, remove the cushion, the thermal crown board and any other heat-reflective component first — formic vapours degrade the aluminium and drop the film's effectiveness. No issues with Varromed or oxalic acid (sublimation or trickle) under standard protocols — neither attacks the aluminium.
