Details of BeevolutionX Thermal Reflective Film for Hives (Roll 47 cm × 50 m)

It is not insulation: it is a radiant barrier. And a radiant barrier only works with air in front of it.

Roll of 50 m × 47 cm of aluminised polyethylene composite film, 40 microns thick, to cut into dividers, top covers or wraps. One reflective face and one matt white face.

01 · WHAT IT DOES AND DOES NOT

Reflects heat; does not stop it by thickness

The manufacturer declares reflection above 85 % in the 8 to 14 micron band, which is exactly where the heat of a cluster radiates. That is what it does: it returns radiant heat instead of letting it escape.

What it does not do, and this is worth saying: at 40 microns thick it adds no insulation by conduction. A sheet of XPS and this film are not the same tool. Stuck flat against wood it loses almost all its point, because a reflective surface needs an air gap in front of it to reflect anywhere.

02 · WHERE TO PUT IT

Three cuts, and what the roll yields

Hence the three uses that respect that principle: stapled to a thin panel it becomes a divider; over the frames, a reflective top cover with the roof cavity above it; and as a strip around the body, an outer wrap against direct sun in summer.

Frame-size divider47 × 46 cmAbout 35
Outer wrap18 cm stripOver 40
Top cover500 × 430 mmAbout 90

It cuts with tin snips and needs no edging. And it takes the pull of a hive tool: the manufacturer's test gives over 25 N per 5 cm.

03 · CONDENSATION

A vapour-tight film can work against you

In winter what kills is not dry cold: it is cold with damp. And this film is vapour-tight, so wrapping the hive on the outside can trap the moisture the colony generates.

The manufacturer says so itself and gives the fix: used as an outer wrap, leave a one-centimetre slot at the bottom so it can breathe. It is not an optional detail.

04 · THE MATERIAL

Why polyethylene and not aluminium alone

Aluminium would reflect just the same, but inside a hive it lives surrounded by propolis and organic acids. The polyethylene is what protects the metal layer from oxidising and what gives the flexibility to keep it from splitting when cut.

The declared working range runs from −30 to +80 °C, so an outer wrap in full August sun is within specification.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is material on a roll, for you to cut:

✓ FITSMade-to-measure dividers, top covers and wraps, on any hive format.
✕ DOESN'T FITReplacing insulation with thickness: 40 microns do not insulate by conduction.
⚠ NOT INCLUDEDThe divider panel or staples.
