Packs for beekeepers

A kit saves two things: money against buying separately and, above all, the list. Starting in beekeeping takes a couple of dozen essential items, and forgetting one means another trip.

Which kit for where you are

• Beginner beekeeper Langstroth kit (€149.95) — hive, protection and basic handling tools. The starting point for one or two hives: you need live material and little else.
• Basic honey house kit (€399.95) — the step up to harvesting properly: extraction, filtering and settling in one order, without deciding piece by piece.
• Complete electric wax melter kit (€255) — for processing your own wax.
• Anti-velutina harp kit with electronics, solar panel and tray (€259.95) — an autonomous trapping system, for apiaries under Asian hornet pressure.

When NOT to buy the kit

If you already have some of the equipment, a kit makes you duplicate. And if you are clear about the hive system you want — Layens rather than Langstroth, say — buying separately lets you choose. The kit is for someone who does not want to decide yet, and at the start that is real value.

What no kit includes: the bees. And it is better not to buy them until the equipment is assembled and the site decided.
