01 · THE HIVE

It comes with a super: two identical boxes and twenty frames

The hive in the kit is complete and arrives assembled: two identical Langstroth boxes in 25 mm solid pine, one as brood box and one as super, each with its 10 wired Hoffman frames. The 20 sheets of Langstroth foundation in the kit fit the 20 frames; floor, crown board and metal roof complete the hive.

It is the stationary model: box and floor are separate, which is the convenient layout for an apiary that stays put. If you plan to move hives from one flow to the next, the migratory version has the brood box fixed to the floor and straps to cinch it down.

02 · PROTECTION

Suit and gloves in your size, chosen in the same order

Above the buy button there are two selectors: suit size (S to XXXL) and glove size (6 to 12). They come preset to L and 9, which cover most adults.

The suit, in 290 g/m² combed cotton with a detachable round veil, goes over your clothes: the sizing already allows for that. The gloves are full-grain cowhide with long canvas gauntlets. They cut stings dramatically, but no leather glove is sting-proof.

03 · HANDLING

Smoker, hive tool and brush: what comes out on every visit

The galvanised steel smoker is used sparingly and for cool smoke. The 25 cm European hive tool prises apart propolised frames and boxes with its flat blade and scrapes corners with the bevelled tip. The single-row bee brush clears bees off the frame before you close up: gentle strokes, because pressing traps them in the bristles.

04 · THE FIRST YEAR

The goal is not honey, it is learning to read a hive

A single hive teaches little: there is nothing to compare it with when something looks odd, and no margin if the queen fails. With two or three of the same model you learn to tell normal from exceptional; that is why whatever you buy next —another box, a super, a nuc— should stay Langstroth, and the kit is built on that idea: one format only.

What the kit does not cover, and you need before the bees arrive: the nuc or swarm, a feeder for the start, the annual varroa treatment and whatever apiary registration your region requires.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is Langstroth only: there is no Dadant, National or Warré version. If your area works another format, buy that format's kit: mixing sizes is the expensive first-year mistake.
