01 · WHY WOODEN FRAMES GIVE UP

The wire cuts into the pine, one re-tension at a time

A tensioned wire on softwood does not stay put: it sinks in. First it marks, then it opens a groove, and every time you re-tension — because the frame gives with the years, with the extractor and with the heat — the wire finds that groove and drops a little further. Without eyelets the process runs much faster, because the wire bites straight into the grain. The ending is familiar: the end bar is eaten away, the wire no longer tensions against anything, and a whole frame goes in the bin because of two pieces two centimetres across. The plastic on these end bars does not deform and does not crack, so the wire always tensions against the same surface.

02 · ASSEMBLY AND FOUNDATION

Fit it, staple it, then decide what goes inside

It arrives flat-packed: the four pieces slot together and get stapled. From there you have two routes, and it is worth being clear about them before ordering what goes with it:

Arriving flat-packed has a second reading, and it is the one that explains the design: the wear lives in the wood, not in the plastic. When the top bar splits or the bottom bar breaks, the end bars are still as they were on day one.

03 · AGAINST THE OTHER FRAMES

Neither all wood nor all plastic

The wooden frame is the cheapest and the one bees take without argument, but it is the one the wire eats. The all-plastic frame removes the problem altogether and never needs wiring, though it changes how you work and not everyone wants plastic in the brood box. This one sits in the middle on purpose: plastic where strength is needed, wood where the bees work. And it still takes wax, which is what many beekeepers will not negotiate away.
