A 1 kg spool: 0.50 mm diameter and around 800 metres. Bright-drawn and annealed, with a certified tensile strength of 716-796 N/mm².
01 · HOW FAR IT GOES
The 800 metres on the spool cover roughly 412 Layens frames, 500 Langstroth, 381 Dadant brood or 510 shallows. Those are indicative: the wiring pattern moves them a lot. Stainless does not rust in the wax or mark the honey, and it survives frame after frame of recycling; in exchange it feels stiffer than galvanised, so tension gradually to avoid bowing the top bar.
02 · ELECTRIC EMBEDDING
It is what surprises people most when they switch wire: stainless steel has higher electrical resistance than galvanised, so with the same embedder the wax may never melt. If that happens it is not the wire: you need a slightly more powerful transformer or longer pulses. Work with short, repeated pulses, watching the wire: the moment it sinks into the wax, stop. Overdoing it burns the sheet and the wire cuts straight through.
03 · BEFORE YOU BUY
This is the standard wiring gauge, 0.50 mm: fine enough not to cut the wax and strong enough to hold it. If your embedder is a basic one and you would rather not change it, galvanised wire melts in at lower power — but it rusts sooner.
