Galvanised steel spacer rail for Quarti® polystyrene nucs: it fits into the side rebate where the frames rest.

It turns a polystyrene edge into a metal bearing surface. That edge is the hardest-working part of the whole box: it takes every frame that goes in and every hive-tool prise that lifts it out.

01 · BUILD

Polystyrene wears away, steel does not

Polystyrene insulates beautifully and stands up to point wear badly: the frame lug leaves a mark, the mark becomes slack and the frame starts to shift. The rail puts a line of galvanised steel between lug and box, so the wear goes into the metal. In nucs working season after season — splits, rearing, sales — that is the difference between a box lasting three years and one lasting ten.

02 · ASSEMBLY

Count both faces, and check the roof

Frames rest on two opposite sides, so work out how many your box needs before ordering just one. Fitting itself is straightforward, no special tool.

One report from the field: once the rail is in, the roof may no longer sit flush, leaving a fine gap the bees end up propolising. It is not a fault of the part — the nuc's rebate was already cut to size — so check it with the roof on before fitting a whole batch.
