02 · IT WANTS A BIGGER TRANSFORMER
What surprises people coming from galvanised
Stainless conducts worse than galvanised, so with the same transformer less current flows and the wire takes longer to heat. It is the standard complaint from anyone switching over, who assumes the reel is faulty.
The answer is not persistence, it is power: a transformer of 100 VA and 24 V — the one we carry — does the job, and a small one falls short and wears your patience out.
03 · WHY STAINLESS
What finishes off a galvanised wire
Galvanised lasts as long as the zinc coating is intact. The moment it is scratched passing through the eyelet or being tensioned, that is where the rust starts — and a honey house is damp.
Stainless has no coating to lose, and being food grade it adds nothing to the comb.
04 · TENSIONING IT
Like a guitar string
A slack wire lets the comb sag and is the one that lets go in the extractor. Tension it until it rings when you pluck it, and staple there.
And that is why this is a maintenance consumable, not just a new-frame one: rewiring an old frame recovers the woodwork and saves buying timber every season.
