Details of Beehive Entrance reducer against hornets

Hive entrance against Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) and European hornet that lets bees through but keeps predators outside. Available in two models: 378 × 36 mm for Langstroth/Dadant hives and 250 × 36 mm for nucs. The mechanical barrier that drastically reduces the pressure of Vespa velutina and European hornet during summer and autumn in affected areas.

🛡️ How it works — selective passage by size

The entrance has calibrated openings that let workers freely through (Apis mellifera, ≤ 5 mm height) but physically block velutinas and hornets (Vespa velutina and Vespa crabro are ≥ 7 mm tall). The predator cannot enter to steal honey or hunt bees inside the hive. The bees keep going in and out normally — foraging output is maintained while external pressure drops to a fraction of what it would be without the barrier.

📐 Two models depending on hive

378 × 36 mm: fits the standard entrance of Langstroth and Dadant (also many Layens and reversibles). The full-size adult-hive version. 250 × 36 mm: for narrower entrances of nucs, mating nucs and queen-rearing boxes. Specify the model you need when ordering. If you have a mix of hives and nucs in the same apiary, order both — the cost is marginal compared to the damage prevented from the velutina.

⚠️ When and how to install

Install as soon as you detect the first velutina flights over the apiary, typically from July in affected areas and until first frosts. A hive with velutinas hovering in front of the entrance stops foraging within days — foragers stop going out from fear and the colony enters paralysis. The anti-velutina entrance breaks that cycle. Combine with traps (Vetopharma, Beevital, ANEL funnel) to reduce overall pressure. It does NOT replace active control of the enemy — but protects the hive during the attack.
