01 · HOW IT HOLDS THEM

The light, not the liquid

The attractant is kept separate from the capture chambers. The openings let small insects get out, but you still need to check what has actually been caught.

02 · FILLING IT

400 ml, and keep the level up

Check the reservoir and the collection containers often; non-target species may call for daily checks, depending on local guidance. The manufacturer's guide starting volume is around 400 ml, roughly half the reservoir: top up the level and change the contents when they deteriorate.

03 · WHERE AND WHEN

In the shade, and in line with the campaign's aim

Place it in the shade, by the flight paths you have observed and in line with the aim of the trapping campaign. Catching founder queens does not tell you how many nests are prevented.

04 · EMPTYING IT

Check before taking the collection containers off

The collection containers come off by turning them about 30°, following the manufacturer's instructions. Before you take them off, follow the manufacturer's procedure: they may hold live hornets that can get out through the holes. Checking for and releasing non-target insects must be done according to the local protocol and without exposing yourself to stings. Do not open a chamber with live hornets in it on the assumption that they are immobilised.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

The liquid attractant is bought separately. A commercial wasp attractant works, and so does a homemade mix; what does not work is leaving the reservoir empty.
