Plastic trap for early detection of Asian hornet and wasps in the apiary. NOT a mass-control trap — its function is to warn when the first velutinas arrive so you can activate the full system (electric harp + entrances + selective traps). Place in spring (founding queens) and autumn (workers), 10-30 m from the apiary with attracting bait.
Plastic trap for detecting and monitoring wasps and flying insects in the apiary — the early-warning tool to spot the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) arriving before damage is visible on the hives. It is NOT a mass-control trap: its function is to warn you when the first velutinas appear in your area, so you can activate the control system in time (electric harp, selective traps, anti-velutina entrance).
There are two types of velutina traps: detection (this one) and mass control (Beevital, Vetopharma, ANEL, VespaCatch, HornetMaster, etc.). Confusing them leads to costly management errors. This trap, by its size and design, catches a few dozen velutinas across the whole season — enough to confirm presence and for first reconnaissance. To really reduce pressure on the hives you need an electric harp (TA-6090 + KITARPA) or higher-capacity traps (HornetMaster, Beevital).
Spring (March-May): to detect the founding queens of velutina coming out of overwintering looking for a place to establish the primary nest. Catching queens in spring is the most efficient intervention of the year — every queen taken down = a whole nest that does not develop. Summer-autumn (July-October): to confirm worker arrival at the apiary and measure the first pressure wave. Location: 10-30 m from the apiary (not too close, so as not to draw workers to the front of the entrances), in a sunny spot, with attracting bait (Avispa'clac liquid or aerosol).
Spotting the first velutina in a monitoring trap is not time to panic but it IS the signal to deploy the full system: install electric harp + water tray + solar module, strengthen anti-velutina entrances on every hive, set up mass-control traps (Vetopharma, Beevital, HornetMaster) in a 50-100 m circle around the apiary, and tell neighbouring beekeepers about the presence to coordinate regional control. The detection trap does its job when it triggers the rest of the protocol.
