01 · FIRST, THE FRAMING

Registration, safety interval and who may use it

It is registered with the Spanish Directorate-General of Public Health, Environmental Health, under number 14-30-07064 (under renewal), and it is intended for use by trained professional personnel. Read the label before applying, and the safety interval is 12 hours.

Its composition is pyrethroid: permethrin 0.5%, pyrethrum extract 0.4% and piperonyl butoxide 1%. That is what gives the fast knock-down effect you want on a nest — and it is also what makes the following necessary.

02 · IN AN APIARY, CARE

What kills wasps kills bees

Pyrethroids are highly toxic to bees. Do not spray onto a hive, or near the entrance, or with the hive open, or onto flowers and vegetation where bees are foraging.

And it is worth saying what it is not: it is not a trapping product and not entrance protection. It is for a one-off intervention on a specific nest. Taking the pressure off an apiary is done with selective trapping in spring and physical protection of the entrance in summer.

03 · NOT ALL NESTS ARE THE SAME

And a velutina nest is not touched

A small common-wasp nest in a shed or under the eaves, at night and with proper protection, is within reach of someone who knows what they are doing.

A nest of Vespa velutina is another matter: it can hold several thousand individuals, it is usually high up, and its removal has its own protocol — in many regions it is reserved to authorised personnel. If you find one, do not touch it: report it to your regional services.

04 · WHAT THE CAN IS LIKE

Four metres of reach and knock-down effect

The jet reaches about 4 metres, which is what lets you treat without standing underneath. The knock-down is fast, and it also affects other insects and arachnids — with everything that implies in a place with more fauna than the one you are after.

As with any aerosol: away from flames and heat sources, and never downwind into your own face.
