Details of Protective Suit for Wasps and Asian Hornet

Removing an Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) nest is nothing like a routine hive inspection: sustained pressure, coordinated attacks and repeated stings, and the velutina's stinger —longer than a honey bee's— goes straight through thin fabrics, classic mesh veils and the split-leather of an ordinary glove. This is a complete intervention kit —padded coverall, hood with face screen and gloves—, classed as Category II PPE: more manageable than full firefighter gear and well above any conventional bee suit. Built for whoever actually goes in after the nest, not just to stand near it for a while.

🛡️ A multilayer barrier, not a thin fabric

The body of the suit works in layers: a tough outer fabric, a padded filling that creates a gap between cloth and skin, and an inner lining. That gap is the key: even if the hornet drives its stinger into the surface, it cannot reach the body. The opposite of a single-thickness bee suit, where the velutina's long stinger goes right through. Outer shell 60 % cotton / 40 % polyester (240–250 g/m²) with 200 g/m² inner padding.

🥽 Face protected, plenty of vision

The head is the critical point: the velutina aims its attacks at the face. The structured hood holds the face screen away from your face, so the stinger cannot reach the skin even if the hornet lands on it. The screen gives a wide field of vision —up, down and to the sides—, which matters when you work at height, up a ladder or with the nest above your head.

🔧 Reinforced where the suit fails (and where you get stung most)

Knees, shins, elbows and shoulders carry a second layer of reinforced fabric, in contrasting grey. These are the areas that suffer most when you kneel beside a nest, lean on a roof or rub against bark and metalwork, and also where stings pile up as you bend forward. It is what separates a suit that lasts seasons from one that splits the first autumn.

🧷 No gaps to slip through

PPE only protects if it leaves no openings. Central front zip, elasticated waist, knitted cuffs at the wrists and, at the ankles, elastic with an under-foot strap so the trousers don't ride up as you walk through undergrowth or climb a ladder. The rubberised gloves are included and join the sleeve with no skin left exposed between glove and suit. On the chest, flap pockets for phone, radio or tool —handy on fire-service or pest-control jobs— and a reflective strip on the sleeves. It doesn't remove the risk: it cuts the entry points to a minimum.

⚠️ Gloves included by size — and a warning

Each suit ships with a pair of gloves matched to its size:

· Sizes S and M → glove M/8
· Sizes L and XL → glove L/9
· Sizes XXL and XXXL → glove XL/10

If you need a different glove size, note it in the order comments and we'll change it before dispatch. And the usual with any PPE: no equipment guarantees total protection. Check zips, cuffs and seams before every intervention.

📐 Which size do I choose?

Go by chest measurement and height. If you're between two sizes, size up to wear it comfortably over your work clothes.

Size Chest (cm) Height (cm)
S92–96164
M96–100170
L100–104176
XL104–108182
XXL108–112188
XXXL112–116192

🎯 Who is it for?

For anyone who really faces the velutina: beekeepers under heavy Asian hornet pressure in front of the apiary, pest-control companies, fire and rescue services, civil protection and municipal teams that remove nests. For a quick spring hive check it's more kit than you need; to get your hands into a nest, it's exactly the one you want.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Does it work for the Asian hornet / velutina?
Yes: that's exactly its use, removing and working near Vespa velutina nests. It also works against the European hornet (Vespa crabro).

What's in the set?
Padded coverall, structured hood with face screen and a pair of gloves in the matching size.

Is it washable?
Yes, washable up to 60 °C and dried at low temperature.

Can I use it as a normal bee suit?
You can, but it's built for higher risk: more enclosed and warmer than a light suit for quick visits, so it's hot for everyday apiary work. Its place is the intervention.

Which size should I order?
Use the chest and height table above; if in doubt between two, choose the larger to work loosely over your clothes.
