Details of VespaCatch Select® - Selective Trap for Vespa orientalis and velutina
Trap for Vespa velutina and Vespa orientalis with entrances adjustable from 7 to 11 mm: you set the gap to keep out the insects you do not want.
Trapping lowers the pressure on the apiary, it does not remove the species. With that expectation set, what decides the result is where, when and with what you bait.
01 · SELECTION, IN MILLIMETRES
7 to 11 mm, and the rest stays out
This is what sets it apart from an ordinary trap: the entrances adjust between 7 and 11 mm to let the hornet through and not the honeybee or the smaller pollinators. And the inside is designed so that what you do not want can get back out, rather than piling up as by-catch. Getting that opening right is half the work: too wide and it catches everything, too narrow and it catches nothing.
02 · THE CALENDAR
Queens in spring, protein in summer
There are two windows and they do not want the same bait. From February to May you trap the founding queens looking for a nest site, and there sugary attractants work. From July to November, once the colony is running and needs protein, you have to switch bait and test which one pulls best in your area. The peak of pressure on hives falls between June and September — that is when the trap has to be out, no excuses.
03 · HOW MANY AND WHERE
One per two hives, or three
The working reference goes by observed activity: with low pressure, one trap per two hives; with moderate pressure, one per hive; with high pressure, three per two hives. Put them where the hornets pass — near the entrances if the aim is to protect the hive, or 1.5-3 m up in a garden — and move them if nothing drops in a few days: hornets follow routes, and a trap off the route does no work.
04 · MAINTENANCE
Do not wash it, and leave one inside
It sounds odd and it goes against instinct: when you renew the liquid, do not clean the trap and leave a dead hornet inside. The built-up smell is part of the lure, and a freshly scrubbed trap starts from zero. Two more warnings: trapping works above 15 °C, and you never put insecticide in the bait — it poisons everything that goes in and everything that later feeds there.
05 · BEFORE YOU BUY
The attractant liquid is separate: the trap is sold empty. And it is a management tool, not a solution to the hornet problem.

VespaCatch Select offers multiple levels of selectivity, thanks to an adjustable dial that allows you to adapt the size of the entry holes (from 7 to 11 mm).
For queen trapping in spring, set it to 9 mm. For worker trapping in autumn, adjust it to 8 mm, which prevents the capture of larger insects.
For smaller insects that may enter the trap, exit holes allow them to escape easily.
The liquid attractant is protected by a grid, preventing them from drowning.
