Details of VespaCatch Select® - Selective Trap for Vespa orientalis and velutina
Trap for the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) and the Oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis), with the entrance adjustable to five sizes, from 7 to 11 mm, to suit the species and the season.
Use it to trap foundresses in spring and as back-up for an apiary under attack in summer and autumn. It lowers the pressure on your hives; it does not wipe out the species or the nest.
01 · ENTRANCE SIZE
A dial under the lid decides which hornet gets in
The lid has two entrances of 11 mm, and the dial underneath narrows them to 10, 9, 8 or 7 mm: anything bigger than the hornet you are after stays outside. Véto-pharma's settings:

02 · SELECTIVITY
Small insects get in, but they don't drown and they find the way out
A worker bee fits through 7 mm with room to spare, so what protects your bees is inside: an anti-drowning grid over the bait liquid, a filter cone that stops the hornet finding its way back out, and the escape holes in the yellow container, through which small insects leave.
Selective does not mean it only catches Asian hornets. In a preliminary trial in Asturias and Catalonia (Spain) in September 2024, with attractants under test, 93% of the catch was Asian hornet. In spring more insects are flying: the manufacturer's own field test in France counted one to two non-target insects per Asian hornet where pressure was highest, mostly flies and wasps.
03 · BAIT AND UPKEEP
Fresh bait every three weeks, without scrubbing the trap
Véto-pharma's dose per trap is 10 ml of its VespaCatch attractant, 50 g of sugar and 200 ml of water, in the black reservoir with the grid on top; with another attractant, keep its own ratio and scale it to that volume. Because it doesn't drown what it catches, in summer it also takes protein bait, prawns or fish, when the workers turn away from sugar.
Renew the bait every three weeks at most and don't scrub the trap: the smell of earlier catches draws in the next ones. If it needs it, rinse it with water, no soap, and leave a dead hornet inside. If nothing goes in within a few days, move it. Below 15 °C the attractant loses strength.
04 · BEFORE YOU BUY
Select or Original? Véto-pharma keeps both: the Original, which works by drowning and costs less, for apiaries under very heavy predation; the Select, to adjust the entrance, avoid drowning what gets in and be able to use protein bait.
How many? With 2 hornets per hive hawking at the entrances, one trap for every two hives; with 3 to 5, one per hive; with more than 5, three for every two. That is Véto-pharma's guideline for its Original model.

⚠ PRECAUTIONS
The hornets are still alive inside when it's time to change the bait: Véto-pharma advises dunking the trap in a bucket of water before opening it. Spring trapping of foundresses is regulated locally: check the rules where you are before hanging it.

With VespaCatch Select, we were committed to providing beekeepers with an affordable solution for the selective capture of the Yellow-legged hornet. This is a reasonably priced trap that allows everyone to equip themselves to protect their hives or green spaces.
VespaCatch Select offers multiple levels of selectivity, thanks to an adjustable dial that allows you to adapt the size of the entry holes (from 7 to 11 mm).
For queen trapping in spring, set it to 9 mm. For worker trapping in autumn, adjust it to 8 mm, which prevents the capture of larger insects.
For smaller insects that may enter the trap, exit holes allow them to escape easily.
The liquid attractant is protected by a grid, preventing them from drowning.
