01 · WHAT IT IS FOR

What falls, falls beyond the colony’s reach

Laid over the floor tray, the mesh lets the natural drop of the hive fall through — wax debris, cappings and fallen varroa — and the bees can no longer pick it up and take it back. The hive stays cleaner, ventilates better from below in summer and, above all, can be read: with a sticky sheet in the tray for 24, 48 or 72 hours, the daily mite drop comes from dividing the count by the days.

02 · WHAT ELSE YOU NEED

The mesh is half the piece

This mesh is not a complete screened floor: it is the screen. Underneath it goes the removable sheet or tray that collects what falls — ours measures 482 × 397 mm and has a folded rim — and all of it rests on a floor with its runner. If you would rather not assemble anything, there is the complete screened floor, already built with its mesh and drawer. This piece is for someone who has floors already and wants to convert them cheaply.

03 · THE SIZE

39 × 49 cm, and measure your floor before ordering

It comes cut to 39 × 49 cm, the size that fits Langstroth and ten-frame Dadant floors. It is the question that reaches this page most often, so let us be plain: if your floor is wider — a twelve-frame Dadant, for instance — this plate falls short and you need another size or you have to cut it. The expanded metal is rigid and galvanised, so it takes damp without rusting and asks for no maintenance.
