Galvanised steel sheet measuring 482 × 397 mm, cut to slide into the slot of a compatible screened bottom board. Positioned beneath the mesh, it allows the screened floor to be partially closed when required and enables waste falling from the colony to be collected on a removable tray.

📐 The slot dimensions determine compatibility

Before ordering, measure the clear opening of the bottom board and the guide slot, not just the outer box. The plate must fit flush, slide in without resistance and be removable even when there is propolis or dirt present. The folded flange visible on one side serves as a handle; keep it accessible and check that it does not protrude dangerously during transport or when working around the hive.

🔎 A useful surface for observation, not an automatic diagnosis

As it sits beneath the mesh, it collects wax, caps, debris and mites that fall off naturally. This helps to track trends without opening the hive and to compare periods before and after a treatment. The natural fall of Varroa mites is indicative: it varies with the season, the amount of brood, the bees’ cleaning behaviour and re-infestation. To make health-related decisions, use a defined observation period and combine this with a suitable counting method.

🧹 Remove it, inspect it and clean it regularly

Do not allow damp debris to accumulate on it over long periods. Remove it by the folded edge, note down your observations if you are monitoring the hive, clean the surface and dry it before replacing it. Whether the bottom is left open or closed should be adapted to the weather, ventilation and the strength of the colony: the plate is neither a Varroa treatment nor a fixed solution for the whole year.
