Toothed angle entrance strip in 0.8 mm galvanised sheet with two positions: open and closed. The closed face keeps ventilation, so it blocks the way through without shutting the colony in with no air on a move. Turn it 180° to swap. Two sizes: 428 mm for a hive, 240 mm for a nuc.

Details of Angled hive entrance (opened-closed)

428 & 240 mm

TWO SIZES

22 mm

HEIGHT

0.8 mm

GALVANISED SHEET

180°

TO SWAP POSITION

Toothed angle entrance strip in 0.8 mm galvanised sheet, with two positions: open and closed. You swap from one to the other by turning it 180°.

What sets it apart from a plain blanking plate is what it does once closed: the closed face is not solid, it is vented. That is the difference between shutting a hive to move it and shutting the colony in with no air.

01 · THE TWO POSITIONS

Closed, but not sealed

One face is toothed: the bees go through it, and that is the normal working position. The other blocks the way, and this is where it matters — it keeps ventilation. Shutting the entrance of a full hive and loading it on the lorry with no air is the quickest way to lose it: with no draught, the colony's own heat climbs. Here the way through is blocked and air still gets in. Swapping positions needs nothing taken apart: loosen it, turn it 180° and fix it again.

02 · THIS ONE OR THE WINTER/SUMMER?

Same dimensions, different job

There are two angle entrance strips in the range at these same sizes. They are easy to mix up, and the choice comes down to what you want it for.

Open / closed (this one)Two states: free passage, or passage blocked with ventilation. This is the one for shutting a hive to move it or taking it out of service.
Winter / summerIt does not close: it graduates how much entrance you leave, by colony strength and season. That one adjusts the entrance, it does not block it.

03 · WHICH HIVES IT SUITS

You can tell from the floor and the sides

It is meant for hives with a separate floor: the floor is its own piece, it shows below the box and runs forward to make the landing board, and the sides of the boxes are flush — the handhold is a recess cut into the timber itself. If instead you see battens running horizontally around each box and no landing board, that is a migratory-pattern hive and its front is handled differently. Before ordering, measure the actual mouth of your entrance too: the strip is 22 mm tall and you choose between 428 mm for a hive and 240 mm for a nuc.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is sold singly, so count one per hive you are fitting out. The 0.8 mm galvanised sheet stands the weather without rusting and needs no paint.

✓ FITSShutting hives for migratory work or a move, and blocking the entrance while leaving air during a job.
✕ DOESN'T FITAdjusting the entrance by season: that is what the winter/summer version does.
⚠ NOT INCLUDEDThe screws. And it is not a hornet guard: it blocks the way through, it does not filter by size.
