The catch is the traditional metal fastener of hives with a hinged lid, above all Layens hives. Together with the hinge on the opposite side, it holds the lid down and lets you open and close the hive in one movement, without tools.

A simple piece, but the one that decides whether the lid is still on after a journey or a windy night.

01 · HOW IT CLOSES

It turns on the top screw and hooks below

It is sturdy metal, made for the weather and the rough handling of an apiary. It is fixed through the upper hole and turns on that point: the curved end drops and hooks onto the fitting on the hive body, holding the lid firm against wind, against the shaking of transport and against the animal that pushes. Once fitted, it opens and closes with your thumb, with no tools and without taking the hive off its stand.

02 · WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED

Neither screws nor the hook it bites on

It is sold singly, by the unit, and it is worth knowing what you have to add: the screws or pins to fix it and the fitting on the body that the hook bites on. We do not carry that fitting: a screw eye or a staple from a hardware shop, in a gauge the hook takes, does the job. The usual is to fit two catches per lid, one on each side, so count in twos, not in ones.

03 · WHERE IT IS USED

Layens, nucs and anything with a hinged lid

It is the typical fastener of the Layens, the horizontal hive with a full lid, and it works just as well on nucs and nuc carriers with a hinged lid. On equipment that moves — migration, changes of site, boxes travelling on a trailer — it is what saves you the fright of finding a lid open on arrival. On fixed equipment it keeps the lid from lifting in the winter wind.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Supplied singly. Fit two per lid and have screws and a hook ready.
