Rotating galvanised steel disc, 125 mm, with four positions: open, excluder, ventilation and closed. One turn changes it.

It turns on a centre screw and presents a different section over the same opening each time. The position to understand before you fit it is the excluder: at a 4.2 mm gap the worker gets through, but neither the queen nor the drones.

01 · THE EXCLUDER POSITION

Drones don't get through either, and that changes where it goes

An excluder does not recognise queens: it sorts by size. 4.2 mm is the standard gap, and through it the worker passes but the queen and the drone do not. The consequence rarely gets said out loud: leave this position on the hive entrance and the drones inside cannot get out, so they pile up at the entrance. That is why this position belongs between boxes, in the hole of the crown board: you separate the brood box from the super and the workers keep moving. On the entrance it is used deliberately and briefly — to hold the queen in if you suspect swarming.

02 · THE OTHER THREE

Open, ventilation and closed

The open setting is the large hole: free passage for strong colonies in full flow. The ventilation setting is slots that let air move without giving an open way in, useful on hot days or with robbing about. And closed is solid sheet, for transport or to isolate a hive. On that last one it is worth being straight: a disc on the ventilation setting does not on its own guarantee the airflow a shut hive needs on a lorry. If you are moving colonies, ventilation is worked out across the whole hive — floor, crown board and roof — not from this one part.

03 · WHERE IT MOUNTS

It needs a round hole, not a slot entrance

It works over a circular opening: the hole in a crown board, the round entrance of a nuc or a poly box, or one you drill yourself. It will not go on the slot entrance of a classic Langstroth, because there the way in is a slot. It fixes with a centre screw, not included, tightened just enough that it turns firmly and does not move on its own; a washer between screw and sheet keeps the turn smooth for years. Before you call it fitted, run through all four positions and check each one covers the whole hole: if the excluder setting leaves a gap, it has stopped being an excluder.

04 · THIS ONE OR THE PLASTIC?

We stock two of the same diameter, and they do different jobs

Both are 125 mm and both turn the same way, but their four positions do not match.

Galvanised (this one)	Open · excluder · ventilation · closed. The only 125 mm one with an excluder gap, and the steel takes weather and condensation.
Plastic, 125 mm	Open · slotted · vented · closed. No excluder position: it graduates the entrance, it does not separate the queen.

For nucs and mini-nucs there are 70 mm and 50 mm versions. Measure the opening first: diameter is what rules a disc out.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

✓ FITS	Crown boards and round 125 mm entrances, and any work that calls for separating boxes without fitting a full excluder.
✕ DOESN'T FIT	The slot entrance of a standard hive: that is a slot, and it takes an entrance block instead.
⚠ NOT INCLUDED	The centre screw or the washer. Nor the crown board: the 125 mm hole is down to you.
