One-piece plastic frame with 4.9 mm cell already embossed, in the American format: 48 cm top bar and 23 cm deep.

American and Langstroth are the same format, and the depth tells you what matters: this is the brood-chamber frame, not the medium super one.

01 · THE FORMAT

The 23 cm depth is what decides

It is the question this page gets most, and one measurement settles it: a Langstroth brood frame runs about 23 cm deep and the medium super one stops at 16. This is the first, and its 48 cm top bar rests on the box rebate exactly like a wooden frame.

02 · THE CELL SIZE

4.9 mm, with no health claim attached

The usual worker cell in European bees is around 5.3-5.4 mm, so 4.9 is a deliberately smaller size. It is a management choice, not a treatment: the available evidence does not support that health effect in European bees.

Bring it in as a change of equipment, and go on measuring infestation and treating when due with an authorised product.

03 · GETTING IT READY

It is not drawn comb: wax it first

It arrives with the cell embossed in the plastic, but the comb is drawn by the bees. A coat of melted wax over the cell improves acceptance; the odd colony draws it unwaxed, but that is not the norm.

In return, it takes the extractor and a wash without any wiring.
