Plain straight frames are cheaper to source and assemble, but with no spacing between the side bars the bees glue them together with propolis and wax, sealing the bee spaces and turning every inspection into a wrestling match. This converter clip turns a straight frame into a self-spacing Hoffman frame: two plastic clips per frame, snapped onto the top bar, hold the correct bee space between the side bars without using castellated spacers or any extra hardware in the brood box.
The clip recreates the side-bar shoulder of a Hoffman frame on top of a straight one, leaving exactly the bee space the colony needs between adjacent frames. That removes the need for castellated runners or plastic spacers, which slip out of place when you handle the box and have to be set straight before every inspection or extraction.
Fit two clips per frame, one on each end of the top bar. They snap onto 25 mm top bars by hand, no tools required; if you migrate hives or rough-handle them, a single staple or panel pin per clip is enough to lock them in place. They work just as well on bare frames before wiring as on already-built straight frames you want to convert without dismantling.
Unlike timber spacers, the plastic does not swell with damp or chip when handled, and it tolerates the caustic soak or hot wash you give frames between seasons. Once fitted, the clip stays on the frame: no need to pull anything off for uncapping or extraction.
