PER FRAME

Half-super frame in pine, straight — no Hoffmann shoulder — and horizontally wired with three wires. This is where the bees draw the comb and store the super honey, and it comes out of the hive to go through the extractor.

Two things to know before buying, and they are the two that send frames back: there is no groove, and the top bar decides the spacer.

01 · NO GROOVE

The sheet is held by the wire, not by a groove

The top bar of this frame is plain: it has no groove to slot the wax sheet into. That is not a fault, it is how a wired frame works: the sheet rests against the three wires and is fixed by embedding them into the wax, with an embedding wheel or a 24 V transformer. Done that way the comb is stitched to the wire and takes the spin of the extractor. If your way of working is to slide a sheet into a groove and do without wire, this is not your frame.

02 · THE TOP BAR DECIDES

25 or 30 mm, and the spacer follows

It comes in two versions: 48 × 17 cm with a 30 mm top bar and 48 × 16 cm with a 25 mm one. The height has to match your half super, but the figure that saves the most grief is the top-bar width: the standard spacer bar is notched for 25 mm, and a 30 mm frame will not drop in without filing. If you already have spacers fitted, measure the notch before ordering; if you are starting from scratch, choose top bar and spacer together.

03 · THE WIRE

It arrives slack, and it has to be tensioned

The three wires come threaded from the factory but not tensioned, as with the rest of our wired frames: you tension them at the bench, with a frame tensioner, until the wire rings when you pluck it. It is a minute per frame that decides the year: a slack wire lets the comb bow in the extractor and, with a full half super, that means honey on the extractor floor. Check the staples of the frame too before you wax it.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Supplied without wax, wired and untensioned. Choose the version by the height of your half super and by the top bar.
