01 · THE WEIGHT

The box you can still lift at the end of the day

A full super of honey can come to twenty kilos and you have to want to lift it onto a trailer. The half super splits that load in two, and on migration — where a day means many lifts — that decides whether you finish the afternoon or not. It also changes the rhythm of the harvest: with two half supers you take honey in two goes instead of waiting for one full one to fill.

02 · THE SIZE

48 × 17 outside, and which hives take it

The external dimensions are 48 × 17 cm, in 22 mm pine with a 30 mm top bar. It fits Langstroth and standard migratory Dadant. If your hive is from another maker or a local size, run the tape round the outside of the body before ordering: the number of frames is not enough to settle it, and this is the family where that mistake is most common.

03 · THE FRAMES

Straight and wired: they need a spacer

It comes with eight straight frames, already wired, so all you add is the foundation. Note the difference from supers with Hoffman frames: a straight frame does not space itself, so it needs a castellated spacer or another spacing device to hold the distance between combs. If you are used to Hoffman, count on that extra part.

04 · THE FINISH

Linseed oil, which is not paint

It carries a coat of linseed oil: it protects the timber and lets it breathe, and it is gone over every few seasons without stripping anything. It is not a final outdoor finish — if the supers are going to live outside, top the exposed faces with exterior paint. Nothing gets painted inside.
