Details of Urban Beehive BEE-PASS®

A 10-frame Dadant hive mounted on a chimney and stand: the bees come and go 2.40 metres above the ground.

The height is not styling: it is the flight path. A hive at ground level launches its foragers at the height of a passer-by's face. Raising the entrance to 2.40 m puts that highway above people's heads, and that is what makes a hive workable in a garden, a park or a company courtyard.

01 · THE ENTRANCE AT 2.40 METRES

It changes where they fly, not what they are

Bees leave the hive and gain height straight away; if the entrance is already high, the traffic happens well away from people. It is the same principle as the hedge or the wall that siting rules ask for: forcing the flight upwards.

It is worth saying plainly: the chimney changes where the bees fly, not what is inside. It is still a live colony, and the local and regional rules on distances to dwellings and roads still apply — height does not exempt you from them.

02 · WHAT COMES IN THE KIT

A complete hive, not just the chimney

You get the Ruchéco Dadant 10-frame hive complete — body, frames, screened floor and galvanised roof — plus the wooden stand, the legs and the chimney that raises the entrance.

It is the economical version of the BEE-PASS® urban concept installed in France since 2009. On a standard 10-frame Dadant, the management is the usual one: what changes is the height of the entrance and where you are able to put it.

03 · THE WINDOW OPENS AND CLOSES

And it is better kept closed

It has a glazed section to watch the traffic inside, protected by wooden shutters. That protection is not decoration: brood needs darkness, and a window left permanently open unsettles the colony.

The sensible use is that of a teaching hive: open the shutters when someone is looking and close them afterwards. That way you can show the inside without paying for it in nervousness.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

A hive for places where an ordinary hive would not fit.

✓ FITS	Gardens, parks, company grounds and exhibitions: entrance at 2.40 m on a 10-frame Dadant.
⚠ THE RULES STILL APPLY	The height helps with the flight path, but it does not exempt you from the distances and permits your local rules require.
✕ NOT A PRODUCTION HIVE	It is meant for outreach and urban settings. To harvest in series, both the hive and the site are different.
